6600 D5 Abu Garcia

Recommended Posts

I bought one last year and used it one weekend then exchanged it for a 6500C3. I didn't think it was built strong enough either for Musky fishing. It was harder to control than the C3. The plastic thumb bar broke the first day too. Hard to beat the time proven 6500C3.

This thread got me curious so I went to the "store" to play with reels (like I needed a reason). I checked out the reels you guys where asking about and I this was my thoughts on some of them;

I didnt like the feel of the 6600 and it felt odd or out of balance in my hand when mounted on a rod. Plus all the 6600 I looked at have 6.3:1 ratios, I think this is a touch on the fast side for any baits that pull hard. I'm not a big Abu fan simply for the trouble I have had with the drags through the years. They have a new drag system but I'm going to wait on these and see how they do before I buy one.

I can testify for the 6500 C3 and C4s all day. Good reels, time tested and proven musky reel. I even have a 5600 I used for jig fishing, loved the reel until the drag blasted a month into it. I just can't get the pictures of the drags smoking out and fish running like mad and my thumb burning trying to create some form of drag with Abus. A lot of guys use them with no problems but they appearently don't fit my style of fishing or something.

One reel that I am impressed with is the Daiwa Luna, I like how it is put together, love the release and how the drags are built(the guys at the store really get worked up when you take apart reels at the counter). Plus this reel has awesome spool capacity for the reel size.

As some of you know I am a die hard Shimano Calcutta TE fan. I love em, no problems with them since I started using them and they are just as smooth as the day I bought them, and I put a few yards of line through a reel in the summer. wink.gif

I will say this although; the Cardif and Calcutta B just don't seem to cut the mustard when it comes to strength or how I feel they are built, it seems like such a dramatic difference from the TE to the B models it's disapointing that for a lower priced reel you lose so much.

All in all for a guy that is going to be musky fishing on a normal level and not out four five time a week you can't go wrong with the old Abus(6500c3/c4). For the guy that is going to really hammer the water and fish from ice out in Iowa until freeze up before just before Christmas I would step up and invest the money in a Diawa Luna or Calcutta TE.

Just my thoughts on it.

I picked up a couple of 6500 C4s last year and they seem to be holding up fine. I put one on a bucktail rod and used it alot, great for throwing your average bucktail but will not stand up to dbl eagles sized bucktails or bigger spinnerbaits. They also cast easier and this is what my wife likes to use when she's along. We'll see if they make it through this year.

Hi all,

Any opinions on the Abu C5 Mag-X? It has an additional casting control feature. Anyone have any insight?

It's built the same as the classic Abu reels, so I would hope the overall construction is not an issue. More curious about the casting control, i.e. a gimmick or beneficial, especially for some of those lighter lures.

Thanks

Chris

Casting control is a total gimmick. Still a good reel but don't buy it for that feature. After several casts the dial on the side of the reel will just roll back and forth with little to no effort. It doesn't have any effect on casting performance. Just my 2 sense! laugh.gif This has been my experience.

If you can't spring for a Calcutta and are buying an Abu, I have had the best luck with their 6500 big game series. It's a higher gear ratio for faster retreives, but it has been the longest lasting abu I own. The TCM in the 6500, or trophy series has held up pretty well too. Any abu will need to go into the shop after a while with enough use.
