EJ
I am going to New Moon Landing North of Morson, June 2-6. I have not fished LOTW except summer MN charters. What should I expect this time of year in this area? What type of structure (depths) and presentations? How is this resort? Thanks,EJ
Scoot
I've never stayed there, but I've been in there a dozen or so times. The people seem very nice. They're in a great location too, right on the East side of Splitrock Channel. Smallie fishing will be great that time of year. Walleyes will mostly be found near sandy bays, in current areas, near water inlets, and off points. If smallie fishing interests you at all, be sure to chuck some cranks and plastics on the basketball and smaller rock shorelines- great fun. Boedigheimer
EJ, I have spent alot of time in that area. Its one my favorite places ever. I am not familiar with that resort, I usually stayed south of Miles island, but that whole area is great. Scoot hit it on the head with sandy bays(which usually indicates cabbage), and big points (if you have a shelf with 10-20ft). Jigs and crankbaits should get you bit.If its been a warm spring humps close to shore or the saddle between them could see lots of fish. The smallmouth fishing should be bonkers. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits.
benelli_dude2002
I worked at New Moon Landing for 4 years back in when I was in high school. They got 4 cabins I believe, small restaurant, fish cleaning house, bait and located on the east side of Hanson bay just south of the gov't landing. If you bring your own boat be sure to bring some boat bumpers cuz there is a bit of traffic that goes by with 2 houseboat outfits, and several landings for other resorts that come out of the same bay. Other than that, the owners are nice people and good friends of mine. Cant tell you much on the fishing though cuz I live in baudette and its usually a spur of the moment type deal when I go up fishing since it is only a 40 mile drive for me. Good luck in June! EJ
Thanks guys, I am pretty excited. I have been envious watching guys in there own boats while we were on a charter. This year I said we are taking our own boats and will have a smaller group. How are the bugs in early June?EJ
Boedigheimer
The mosquitos could be ferocious, mainly at shorelunch and at dark. Bring deet and hope for a breeze. The blackflies shouldn't be too bad.
marknamy
You picked a good time to go up. The mosquitos shouldn't be too bad that early, however the weather is quite unpredictable. Pack for spring, summer, and fall. Post again before you go, the Morson group is pretty good on reports and tips. Have a good trip, you are going to love the area. Eastwind
The trick with dealing with the mosquitos at dark in Morson is to be in the cabin drinking beer by dark. If you get started fishing by a respectable 9:00 am or so you will have plenty of fishing in by 6:00 pm or so. Then there is plenty of time to clean fish, and be in the cabin before the mosquitos start feeding on you. The best rule of thumb we use in the Morson area at that time of year for fishing eyes is sandy or rocky shorelines that the wind is blowing in to. We normally do not do as well for high numbers of fish, especially per spot, at that time of year but the average size is usually better. And, as everybody else has said, you will love the area.
