Medicine Lake in Plymouth.

I saw a couple nice photos in the Photo Sharing forum, of bass around 5# that came from Medicine Lake. My daughter and her husband bought a house less than a mile from the lake last summer. I assumed this was just a shallow dishpan of a lake with no structure and a lot of hammer handles. If someone has fished this lake for bass and can tell me what kind of structure this lake has I would appreciate it. Does it have any pads or milfoil or emergent vegetation of any kind? I'm a weed fisherman but occasionally catch a fish in the weeds too. Don't worry about me fishing your lake. I believe in CPR. Thanks.

X-tackleman, here's a link to a Medicine Lake thread from last summer that has some more Bass pics. http://www.fishingminnesota.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=455407&page=29&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=43&vc=1

Now, as far as stucture goes. The question is, what doesn't it have? It has lilly pads, downed timber, reeds, rocks, islands, you name it. There is some milfoil, but not alot. The max depth you'll find weeds out there is 5-6 feet. In the spring Curly Leaf Pondweed is pretty thick up to 10-12'. But the DNR has been spraying herbicide in the spring to kill it off. If you have anymore question feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, Here's a little video I made out on one of the Islands....

Thanks for the info Medicine Man. Sounds like an interesting lake. Now if I can talk my daughter and her hubby into letting me stay overnight sometime this summer I'll be giving it a shot. I checked the MN DNR HSOforum and it sounds like it could be pretty fair for walleyes and large northerns also. I looked at an aerial view with Google Earth and was quite shocked at the numbers of houses around the lake. I thought the bays on the south end looked especially interesting but there must be houses on top of houses down there. I counted at least 50 docks around just that one large point. How do people feel about their docks being fished around and under?

Maybe I'll see you on the lake this summer.

I've caught fish off docks on Medicine and never had any confrontations with lakeshore owners. I'm sure it's like any other lake though, a few bad apples exist in every group now days. That goes for lakeshore owners and fisherman alike. At least the law is on our side. A little common courtesy goes a long way.

X-tackleman, Medicine is a good Pike lake. It has high number of fish with good average size. I was out with the DNR during the 2004 lake survey and we brought up some fat fish. As for Walleye's, Medicine is an experimental lake. They started stocking stocking in 99' and are stocking every other year. The 01' stock was showing promise but it got hit hard this winter, it'll be interesting to how many made it past the winter. If you're looking for some eye's Medicine is at the bottom of my list. I've never fished the docks, so I can't give you help on that. I just don't want to run into any angry home owners.

I've enjoyed fishing medecine when I have gotten the chance, but be aware that just like any other large metro lake you'll get some recreational boaters making things a bit tougher. We managed to find some good fish though.

Hi X-tackleman,

I just wanted to remind you that we who fish Medicine Lake are really into Catch and Release so please respect that!

It's a fun lake to fish when they're biting!

Thanks,

Ole

So Medicine Man, if you were going to fish the lake for something to fry up, after wearing yourself out from fighting the hawgs, would it be the gills or perch? Or isn't the size there? I love to fish bass for the sport and then catch a few sunnies for the table. Norherns taste good but they are just not worth the effort of cleaning them.

Also, I don't see why this winter should have been hard on the eyes. It was warmer than most and the ice was thinner. A lake with this depth shouldn't have oxygen problems anyway. So what am I missing?

You might have to pick through them, but there are some nice eater gills and crappies to be had. I will also agree that dock fishing isn't the most productive on that lake. Not sure why but I've done better on the weedline with plastics or spinner baits.

Good luck see ya out there

X-tackleman, the winter weather wasn't the problem for the Walleye's. What I meant was the Walleye's got fished hard this winter. Once word got out about people catching them, they got hit hard.

If you're looking for a meal, Medicine holds some nice Sunnies. I take my grandfather out during the summer and we have no problem catching 7-9" fish. Crappies run 8-10", there are some larger ones, but not many.

Captain, the bass in Medicine spit poisonous venom in your eyes when you catch them. You should probably stay away
