New Rod Advice

Recommended Posts

I just received a very nice rod as a present and would like some advice as to which presentations would work best with this new rig. St. Croix Avid 6'6" MH Casting

10-20 lb line rating--3/8-1 lure wgt

Reason I ask is that it is a heavier rod than I normally use and also a little bit shorter. It has what I would consider a medium action tip and I'm going to pair it with an Extreme baitcaster from BPS. Any comments from others with this type of rod and what you use it for would be great. Also, line requirements and preferences for your suggestions would be great as well. Thank you.

I would make a nice jig-n-pig rod. I'm with you, I like a little longer, but 6'-6" works fine for jigs in open water. It could be used for spinner baits as well. However, the stiffer tip might cut down on your casting distance a bit.

It's too nice of a rod not to use it for something. grin.gif

This certainly will work for heavier baits. I prefer a 7' rod, but 6'-6" will work just fine. A man just can't have enough rods, ya know. Rig the thing and start using it, you'll figure out soon enough it's strong points, it won't dissapoint.

Zep- to be honest a 6'6" MH is probably the most versitle bass rod out there. It may be a tad stiff for working cranks and spinnerbaits..but it can be done.. I myself would use it for Jig-n-Pig as Ray stated, or light carolina rigs, soft plastic jerkbaits(perfect rod for this) texas rigs(perfect rod for this) or even topwater scum frogs(slightly short for this application, but will do plenty good!)

The majority of my bait-casting rods are 6'6". I like a little shorter rod, as I am only 5'9". That rod should be great with a good braid for tossing spinner-baits or swimming jigs in the pencil reeds. With mono on it will work for buzzers, it might be a little heavy for cranks, depending on the taper and tip.

Thanks for all of your responses. That's pretty much what I thought I would use it for. In the last few years I have really been buying specific rods and reels for the different ways in which I like to fish. I have never had a rod like this so it does fill a void and am looking forward to seeing what type of presentations I will like it best for. Most of my rods, as it has turned out, have a little bit more tip action. X-fast is an action I have truly enjoyed fishing. Thanks again and spring can not come soon enough.
