Where are the walleyes being caught? Are they good eating size? Been trying to find some good walleye action. What baits and methods are being used? Might try there this weekend. Planning on also trying the Apple near Amery for some panfish, etc.

River

I cant really divulge the spot on the spot infomation, as it came from a friend, so I gotta keep his secret safe... But, yes, the fish are good eating size, and the fish are still shallow. Along with these 'eyes, some good catches of above average size pike are being caught in the shallows still. Tip-ups seem to be the name of the game!!

I won't divulge spot on spot information either as I have a cabin on the lake. However here are some tips. Don't be afraid to fish after dark. Fish much shallower than you would expect for this time of year. Look for green weeds and turn the light off in the portable if you are fishing in one. Use big minnows. Let the 20 plus inchers go..

Good luck.

In the winter 2 out of 3 weekends and in the summer 3 out of 4. I have been fishing the lake for 35 years. The first ten were with my dad or off the dock. (I am 40) I do know the lake pretty well. I probably could draw up a "Lakemaster type" map on a piece of paper.....

Fortunately that won't happen.....

I am there right now...and should go to bed.

River-newbie, no need to rely on anyone "divulging" spots or methods on this lake. It's a pretty basic lake.I hadn't been up there in over ten years until this last January and my first trip I caught 16" and 19" walleyes.Find the shallow weeds and set your tip-ups w/shiners.I like the shiners on the small side.Be sure to check the tip-ups now and again as the minnows may get caught in the weeds and you may need to raise them up a bit.Best times for me have been 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.That's about it.Good Luck and maybe I'll see you up there. Then I can show you my "spot".

Hey Jim, when's the last time you were down to big round? I actually grew up about 10 minutes away from the lake but haven't fished it for years. I know my dad still goes out there from time to time and has done pretty well it seems.

There definitly alot easier to catch than muskie but i would have to say they are not quite as exciting to fish for and catch.

Fished big round this weekend. Saturaday didn't turn out to bad (for this time of year) 20 panfish and a couple northerns. I wont tell you i fished from about 7:30am-7:00pm, oops. blush.gif Have never fished all day before. Had to keep moving to catch them.

Today was toataly different. Fished From 7:30-1:00 and didn't catch a single thing worth keeping. Bummer for the distance i had to drive. frown.gif

actually i assume i was thinking of a different big round than all you guys. i grew up in balsam lake, WI and there is a big round near there as well. I don't know the hayward area all that well so i guess i got confused. and to answer outdoor ran's question on how i became a trout guy.....i guess i don't know, trout fishing where i grew up is basically non-existant unless you wanted to drive an hour from where i lived. i guess i just got lucky to tangle with a few big girls early on in life and have been hooked ever since....although i do spend plenty of time chasing the warm water species as well.

but speaking of muskies i did live about 5 miles away from deer lake and 10 away from bone and i have only been muskie fishing down there one or two times in my life. i guess i didn't have the patience for muskies when i was young and don't have the time now that i'm older....but not that old. grin.gif

Quickstrike,

You and I were talking about the same Big Round Lake. The one between Luck and Cumberland. Big Round has muskies it in but they are few and far between. I have accidentally caught 2 in the last five years including a 41 inch hybrid off my dock.

There is a nice little trout lake (Pickeral) just down the road from Big Round that you should check out some time. Its got rainbows, brookies and some DNR brood stock browns swimming around it it.

Good Luck WG

walleye-guy, i actually used to fly fish in pickerel (cresent) a lot when i was in high school and always caught a lot of 12-14 inch bows but never got anything big.

Ran, my dad was feeling under the weather and i couldn't find another partner for the weekend so i put the trip off until another weekend. if doind a trip like that sounds interesting to you give me a shout, [email protected]

I fish the lake every week at least once or twice. Its one of the best lakes in the area for fishing. Yes, they are still driving all over the lake, one of the very few lakes around the area. Panfishing and walleye's have been strong for the last 10 years. It is a basic lake without much contour. Fishin walleye's have been shallow yet with good panfish action out deeper. I absolutely love this lake for ice fishing. It is like I said before, one of the best lakes!!! SB

I've fished pipe a few times. other than the st croix river it's one of the only lakes a guy can catch some nice smallies in the area. haven't been there for years but it sure is a neat and beautiful lake. last time i've been out to your neck of the woods was to get some prime rib and battered potatoes at the staples lake bar about 5 years ago, i think it's about time to make a trip back to the area.

About what depth are the walleyes at? We tried a couple different spots and didn't come up with any. What type of structure are they relating to? What times are best?

Quickstrike, I've lived on Pipe now for most of my life. Very forturnate to live on such a pristine lake and yes the smalley fishin can be quite good at times not to mention the monster crappies it has in it. And Staples hasn't changed to much. Larry and Alice still own it and Alice is just as grumpy as always...!!! Give me a hollar next time your in the area. I fish almost everyday on one of the area lakes and the panfishin has been quite excellent. River-Newbie, Walleye's in Big Round I usually catch are in the 6-8fow range, after dark and on large sucker minows. Look for the weed breaks and you'll find all kinds of game fish. SB

Hey guys thanks for all the info!!

How far off the bottom do you set up? I set up about 1/2-1' off. Is this to close? are they cruising higher than that? I was just up there this last weekend for the first time. I really want to get on some ice time walleyes as the St. Croix spots are unsafe with the warm weather.

If there is any other info that would help me and you want to leave me an email my address is [email protected].

Thanks again.
