Allergies

I have a GSP with allergies. Last fall the vet put her on prednisone and it helped - but there were such horrible side effects and we ended up pulling her off the prednisone in October. She had been doing just fine the last two months, but now is starting to show signs of allergies again (itching, scratching, watery eyes, etc).

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with dog allergies with something other than prednisone?

Thanks :-)

Bexter,

Did your vet run tests to see what she is allergic to? (grass, dust, by-product in some types of dog foods).I have a golden that is seven years old that would itch her ears until they bleed and chew on her feet non stop when she was one. The vet ran a test for 80 different things and she had a positive result for 42 of them. We changed her food from Iams to a vet only Purina HA. Yes the food is expensive, around forty dollars for eighteen pounds but you don't have any by-products so the pick-up is the size of a poodle. The vet also gave a perscription for Benadryl that I only have to give her when she eats raw hides or too much human food. I would suggest keep talking to your vet to find the right solution. I could only imagine what it feels like to have poison Ivy all the time.

Hope things get better.

I have a 10 year old lab that never had allergies until we moved to NC. Thought he was going to scratch his hide off, the vet gave him a 20 mg shot of Methylprednisolone and it worked great. Hope this helps

My lab pup got allergies last December (scratching hair off) and we treated him at the U through the winter. Cannot remember the drug but it was not prednisone. He was on the Purina HA as well.

I ended up stopping the medication and switching to Solid Gold food. Expensive but cheaper than HA. He was good from spring though this December when he started scratching again. Less than last year though. Seems to be a seasonal allergy and we are getting by with the Solid Gold and a topical anti-itch I got from Fleet Farm.

I have a 18 month old GSP with the same itching problem.

My vet had her on prednesone as well but I was concerned with the long term affect as it can damage the liver as it will in humans.

He has her on a maintenance dose of Temarial-P and I keep a bottle of Genesis topical spray handy as well.

Both can be used long term.

What kennel is your GSP out of??

Funny thing but my GSP in the past has had the same problems as well. She would actually lick her underside until the hair was off and the skin was red, warm and damp with some raised areas. Especially bad in the front armpits with got to be like touching an alligator.

We ended up having to use a few courses of prednisone and Benadryl when needed. So far this season we haven't had any issues.

I'm a pharmacist by day and honestly if the prednisone worked but the longer course of treatment by mouth led to the side effects you mentioned, in one of the other posts the poster mentioned an injection of methylprednisolone which is a pretty good replacement. Same basic drug class and effect but a one time deal or top end maybe a second dose later.

I'm not a vet so I don't know what other options might be out there for dogs, but if the steroids (prednisone) worked I'd be heading there again but looking at ways to avoid the side effects. There are other oral steroids similar to prednisone for humans so there may be some other oral options for dogs that might have a shorter course of therapy and fewer side effects. Honest truth is short term (10 days or less) of treatment with prednisone or a similar product usually doesn't cause bad side effects in humans but long term use has some real downers possible so it is a bummer that they got so bad in your dog that you need to avoid if possible again.

Thank you guys for responding. I really appreciate everyone's input on what has worked for you guys in the past. I've jotted down what you guys have said and am anxious to get in to talk with the vet about trying something new.

Thank you.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
