Trolling motor size

pikerliker

Question

I just purchased a used 15 ft fiberglass runabout. I want to make it fishable so I'm going to get a bow mounted trolling motor for it. My question is this how big of a motor do I need? I've been told by some that 55lbs is big enough, other say with a fiberglass that I should go 24 volt 65lbs. Any advice? Also know of anyone selling one?

Thanks ~Piker

The tried n true response if money is no object is as much power as you can afford.

I have a 16' fiberglass fish n ski and I upgraded to a Minnkota 55 and have been impressed with it.

Be sure to get the proper shaft length - some trihulls I think can sit high off the water in the front.

This is the most power you can get on 12 volts. For me it's perfect. If it's not enough power because of the wind then I probably shouldn't be on the lake!

The other big plus on these is that they now steer 40% faster. It's very noticeable and a great plus.

And I'm gonna be using it in about an hour....

Hiya,
As far as I'm concerned, there's really no such thing as too much trolling motor. It's nice to have the extra power there even if you don't need it most of the time.

If you've got the battery space a 24v is sure nice to have, even if you don't have a big boat. Especially with what may be a heavier glass hull, it may be very nice to have.

As far as ones for sale, check the for sale board here - they show up from time to time. I will probably have 24v for sale later this coming week...

Cheers,
RK

I have the same type boat and I bought the 50pd. It works pretty good for me. Like the others said more power is nice. Is your boat a tri hull? Also, do you have acces underneath to put the bolts in?
