There are four of us fishing out of woodland resort Jan. 4-7th. We have never been to devils before, just looking for any tips or any info about what we can expecxt. We are mainly looking for eyes and jumbo perch but if there are some monster pike to be had we would go for that to. Any advice/info would be appreciated!

The guys at Woodland will help you out with up-to-date info when you get there (Kyle, the owner, is a nice guy). There's decent walleye action right there in Creel Bay, but perch have been spotty so ask for the report at the bait shop. If perch aren't hitting at all, try one of the smaller lakes within 20 miles for good pike action (Lake Irvine, etc...). It's a big lake - they're probably biting somewhere, just check in closer to when you're going. If you really, really want to go after perch I'd suggest getting a guide like Jeff Dosch (I think he posts here) or the Perch Patrol.

Also, the weekend after you leave is an Ice Team Trap Attack out of Woodland, so there may be some of guys from Ice Team around pre-fishing already, they're a good resource.

One more thing - just noticed you're in Alexandria and I'm actually heading to Lake Mary this weekend, and have never fished it (near Alexandria) - any tips for me? If you've got some spots I'd be willing to exchange a few with you on Devils Lake (GPS or just general area). I'm after crappies and bluegill, not walleye (pre-fishing the NAIFC).

Good luck,

Most of the smaller bays on Devils Lake have between 6-10 inches and the main bodies of water have 4-6". Walleyes and pike have been hitting and a few reports of guys getting into some perch have been coming in. Should be traveling on 4 wheelers by the weekend.

I myself have never been to devils lake either, and i was wondering if anyboy could give me any info on the motels up there. I was wondering if i havent made reservations yet, would it be hard for me to find any places open for the season, and which places to stay are the better ones. Thanks.

I have heard nothing but good things about Dosch's guide service: Never gone out but have seen them on the lake: I know the "perch patrol" guys work hard at finding fish: They are based out of Woodland resort, so I wouldn't hesitate to hire them for a day to get an idea of where to fish: I know that the pike action can get crazy up there....perch were tough last year for us, but Zippy put us on Pike, until you were tired of running for flags!

The pike action will be just as good if not better this year. There were a lot of days last year that four guys could get their limit of 4-8 pd pike in 3 hrs or less. A few guys have got into perch already this year so hopefully this is a good sign for things to come. So far this season the walleyes have really been hitting. If the perch turn on in Devils Lake it will be the hottest lake in the midwest.

This past year in the middle of April I made my first run to Devils and really want to go back. Stayed at Woodland for two nights and would use them again. Everybody over there seemed very friendly, even got a couple locals to show us the "hot spots", something you don't find very often.

Found it odd that there was no access fee's and there were very few no parking signs along the roads which made for lot's of easy on and off fishing with the atv. I think unlike most resorts in Minnesota at Devils lake the locals are happy to see you!
