TSCTSC
going to San Diego in January. Any suggestions on how I can experience some good sea fishing? Heard that they fish for tunas there. Has anyone been there before and fished? Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

0 End of the Line
I was going to go last December when I was there just before Christmas. It a slow time of the season for them for fishing as I was told by even some of the charters. Went to the Zoo instead.

0 Wish2Fish
Hi, I get out to San Diego quite a bit. I think when you'll be there the tuna will be well offshore, and probably in Mexican waters. That means a 2-3 day charter. On the other hand, the fishing's always good in the kelp beds off La Jolla; good variety of fish like kelp bass, 'cudas and even small sharks. I have chartered a boat called the Aristokat. It's a great boat and the captain is a really good guy. Do a search on Google and you'll find their HSOforum. And finally, the half day sportfishing trips are really popular. You will share a large boat with 20-60 other anglers. Over the years, I've had the most fun with Seaforth. Only reason I quit using the sportfishers and started going with private charters is you can always count on a couple seasick tourists on the sportfishers...and you can't always count on them to get to the rail! 0 milnortech
This time of year they still can run into schools of bonito which is a small tuna 10-30lb's .Your best chance to get one is to use a heavy lure you can cast a long way to reach the schools. If you happen to get into some they fight very hard so you need heavy gear to bring them in.They do rent equipment but it is bait cast reels. I use A shimano stradic salt water reel about $150.00 with 40lb Power Pro Line. The reel should be A 4000 or larger. To hold enough line. they usually use A 5 to 7 oz casting jig silver or blue in color sometimes brown or green shur strike makes some and you can get all of this at cabella's . they have them in stock. Iwould rent the bottom fishing pole for halibut or ling cod. You could use your casting rig for the kelp bass. If you decide to go out this should give you the advantage over the other people on the boat. The stella reels have a better drag system but they are also $700-$900.
