Landowner Free License ?

Recommended Posts

Page 68 of the regs state that any landowner that obtains a free license to take one deer must allow public hunting on his/her property. Has anyone taken advantage of this situation? How did it turn out?

I know it is good practice to talk to the landowner to see where other people will hunt and to form a bond, but is it like other public land where you just go? What happens if they tell you to take a hike?

So many questions, so little time.

Thanks,

Mike

It is private land, and you better have permission to be out there.

I've never had the need to persue the issue, but I would assume the land owner still controls who and how many hunters can be out, if for no other reason than saftey and liability issues of others on his land.

You had best contact the DNR and your local CO and get the answer to your question.

Reply from DNR

"You must get permission and they don't have to let you hunt their land. They only have to allow one other non family member hunt there land after the first Sat and Sun of the season. They may have already fulfilled that requirement. Kevin"

Turkey license for landowners works much the same way. The DNR should be able to give you a list of the folks in the area you want to hunt who have been granted a free license.

Give them a call, ask them if you can hunt the land after their hunt, be polite and if they say no thank them for their time. Most people just don't want alot of hunters on their land at one time for safety reasons. People outside the cities are extremely friendly and courteious. Good luck.
