hcrider
Has anyone here ever used a freestanding tripod stand? I haven't actually been in one, but would like to know from others that have. My hunting property is in a clearcut area, there are very few decent trees on which to put a traditional stand, hence the tripod option. How stable is the stand, and also how difficult is the setup?HCRider
Walterwontfalter
I just bought one. It's plenty stable and comfortable once it's up...but it was very, very frustrating to put together (partially at home and partially needed to be assembled on-site). It says in the directions that it takes 3 people to stand it up once it's together but I needed 5 stout and sturdy men to stand it up and anchor it. I will very much enjoy using it but will never buy another one.
luckey
I think Walterwontfalter hit it on the head. We have two of these tripods set up in swamps. They are at least 150 yards from any woods or high ground. You can plan on putting them together three times before you get it right. I would recommend putting it together (including standing it up) in you yard, mark the ends when you remove the legs and other parts for transport and field setup. You will need to anchor it with steel posts or it will blow over. Use a tree or pole to help set it up on location. Most of these have one flaw (at least for me). The seat is mounted in the center of the cage. You can sit and spin around but you cannot stand because there is not enough room between the seat and the rails. I would look at what it would take to mount the seat off center so you have a place to stand.
