Brule River vs. Brule River

Is the Brule River by Duluth that everybody talks about actually the Bois Brule River east of Duluth in Wisconsin as opposed to the Brule River in Minnesota by Grand Marais?

Yes it is, but there is yet another Brule River in Wisconsin and that one is on the border of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin

What the heck is a "Brule"? Or whom? Some of you history buffs will know this one.

It means Burnt Woods in French

And if you should be lucky enough to go fishing there, stop and look at that river for a moment and think about Daniel Greysolon, the Sieur duLhut (After whom the city of Duluth, MN is named)and his men ascending it from Lake Superior in their freighter canoes on their way to the St. Croix and the Mississippi in 1680 - 325 years ago!

I dont know about you guys, but I was fortunate to fish the mighty Brule this summer for the first time ever. I went there basically knowing absolutely nothing about it. What it was, what to expect etc., I pretty much knew nothing more than that it was in Wisconsin and it had some trout in it.

Needless to say I think I will being making a very good effort to make it an annual trip. But not before some major upgrades in the fly fishing equipment. What a beautiful way to spend a day fishing. I almost think I could go all the way there just for the canoe ride
