Different types of Flourocarbon

buzbunni

Question

I've noticed that there are different types/pricepoints for various types of flourocarbon line. For instance, Seaguar flouro leader is very expensive for the amount of line you get. What is the difference as you go up to the different price points?

Is flouro line extruded or just a coating?

Thanks guys.

buzzbuni,

I believe all petroleum based lines are extruded. However, it is possible to apply fluorocarbon coatings to standard mono lines (I believe the P*Lines feature this). The Seaguar you mention is fluorocarbon LEADER MATERIAL which is specifically formulated as a softer, more flexible, premium priced component. It is far costlier than castable flourocarbons such as Vanish, but then you typically use only short lengths in terminal applications--it's not intended for spooling. F-Cs are very abrasion resistant, and claim to refract light exactly as water does--therefore making them nearly invisible to fish. F-Cs will not absorb water and they sink like a stone.

My advice is to stay away from spooling up with fluorocarbons, as their performance characteristics tend to be a bit twitchy. You're better off with plain mono, or superlines with fluorocarbon leaders.

I've tried the P-Line stuff. It's okay. Right now I have a spool of Seagar that I use for leaders. It seems like a decent piece of line. I just bought a 2,000yd spool of 4lb Vanish for $10 so I think I might even spool it up on a rod.

rackenstuff,
I use the P-line 15# for leaders for dipsey/longline/board trolling on lake superior. To me the stuff is still very stiff, much tougher to tie a good knot than regular mono. Since i only make 6' leaders out of it, the 25 yd spool will last me awhile. I had seen a fair amount of negative stuff on vanish on other walleye boards and was tentative about trying it.

I fish Bull Shoals in Arkansas in October and was introduced to the flourocarbon line two years ago by a local sport shop and their advise was not to spool a whole reel, but to use only as a "leader" and length determined by the water you are fishing in. Down there becasue of the clarity, they recommended 50' or so. Darker or stained waters maybe 4-8' depending. Just passing on for what it's worth.

Xplorer- Yea i picked some up for leaders too, 6lb. Tough to see how it handles till your on the water, u know?

Someone named protrapper on here said Flouroclear is all he uses. Also one of the Bass guys said they use it too. They said Thorne Bros recommended it. Mono with a coat of Flouro sounds like a great concept. Any other users? Likes/dislikes?
