Report: Johnson's car flunked post-race inspection

The winning car in last Sunday's Nextel Cup race at Dover, driven by points leader Jimmie Johnson, originally failed inspection for being too high, according to a newspaper report.

NASCAR confirmed to the Augusta Chronicle that the No. 48 car flunked post-race inspection, but it later passed once the shock "settled."

The paper also reported that the shock absorbers on the top five cars in the race — Johnson, Kyle Busch, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin and Ryan Newman — were confiscated along with shock absorbers on the 13th-place car, driven by Greg Biffle.

It was the second time this season that Johnson and Hendrick teammate Busch finished 1st and 2nd in a Nextel Cup race. After finishing 1-2 at Las Vegas in March, Johnson and Busch were docked 25 driver points apiece and their car owner was docked 25 points after the roof height on Johnson's car was too low while quarterpanels on Busch's car were found to be too low.

Johnson's crew chief, Chad Knaus, and Busch's crew chief, Alan Gustafson, were each suspended two races for the Las Vegas infraction. The National Stock Car Racing Commission rolled back the suspensions, instead levying a $35,000 fine on Knaus and a $25,000 fine on Gustafson and placing both crew chiefs on 90-day probation.

Sounds like a viscosity thing - once the oil cools, the valving in the shocks allows the oil to pass by, therefore settling the car back to a normal ride height. Sounds like some good engineering of shock oil or valving of shocks.

Cheating? I don't know, sounds like those who haven't figured it out are just mad because they didn't get there first. I'm sure NASCAR will pull the old "actions detrimental to our sport" rule and rule against this type of thinking.

With what happened to the 25 car the week before and now with the 5 and 48 this week, I bet that Mr. Hendrick has been given a call from Mr. Helton telling him his cars better be clean for the rest of the show. Had this been a Roush or Gibbs thing, would the reaction be the same?

It is a Rousch thing, they took Biffle's shocks too and maybe one other Rouschkateer, I can't remember. Seems like a bunch of teams were doing the same thing and the car did get through tech after a second pass, which I've heard of cars going through tech numerous times to finally make it.

I don't think it's a common thing.....

Instead of soaking up bumps, as shocks normally are designed to do, Smith said the Hendrick cars' shocks were designed almost to work in reverse; every time they hit a bump, the shocks jacked up the car's rear end for about 15 seconds. Because cars encounter frequent bumps at Dover, the shocks apparently kept the Hendrick cars' tails elevated about an inch beyond what NASCAR rules allow for most of the race, directing more air to the cars' rear spoilers and creating extra aerodynamic "downforce" that helped the cars stick to the track.

Probably been running those shocks for quite some time and finally got caught. Wonder how many W's were the reason for this illegal equipment for the 24 and 48 team? Things that make you go hmmmmmm?

You should all go to NASCAR.com and read the article that says there was no penalty because the shocks were legal and the cars passed tech. They are changing the rules now because the Hendrick teams are smarter than the others and used a grey area to their advantage, like any good racer will.

So, CRYBABIES??? Here's what Kevin Harvick's crewchief Todd Berrier says about who the crybabies in this deal are:

Ultimately, Berrier says the point is moot.

"Everybody in this garage is smart enough to know if they're an eighth-of-an-inch high and we're all (complaining) about that, then we're a bunch of wimps and crybabies that are doing the wrong job," Berrier said. "Because there ain't an eighth-of-an-inch that's beat any of us."

Yeah, they passed tech....the second time around! Not initially after the race because the air hadn't bled from the shocks yet. Hmmmmmm. Knaus to Johnson during the burnouts: "Jimmy, good job today but take it easy coming to victory lane....we need those shocks to settle out before post-race inspection."

There is a rule that says the car must be X inches high when it goes through pre-race inspection. There is also a rule that says it must be X inches high when it goes through post-race inspection. The rule is intended to mean that the car should be X inches high all the time!! Gray area, maybe, but the fact is they were exploiting the rulebook and in all essence cheating as their cars were not X inches high during competion....what the inspection process is supposed to regulate.

I hope they sleep well at night....it's going to catch up with them sooner or later. Now I know why Loomis got booted from the 24...he felt guilty and wouldn't let wonderboy run the illegal shocks.

Your vast ignorance is only matched by the size of your big mouth! You have no knowledge and no basis for any of your ridiculous posts. Loomis was with the 48 team when they ran those shocks...THINK ABOUT IT Nimwit!!!!

Loomis ain't the crewchief at the #48 and doesn't make those calls anymore. I was just speculating about why he maybe got booted from wonderboy's team and maybe there is something a little deeper that the rose-colored glasses of Hendrick fans can't penetrate. From your posts, I read speculation and assumptions as well as everyone else. Can't there be a little rumor milling without getting called names and insulted? I think there are forum rules about that you should check.

What I posted above is the facts and I do not understand how you can say I am not knowledgable and have no basis? The rules call for a certain height requirement and that is it. End of story. They didn't pass the first time but then measured again and passed. Just what happened and just what I posted.

Geez this is funny. We all get dump about any other team we like besides Hendrick and when it's time for Hendrick to get some flack we get bombed and called names. Nice.

You know what?? They got caught. As a fan you have to take your lumps, grow a pair, and move on. Truth hurts and Hendrick isn't perfect either.
