There is a zone map available at the DNR site. To hunt bears in those areas you have to submit an application for the zone you'd like to hunt in. Your entered into a lottery and you have to be drawn to hunt that zone.

You'll have to check for any additional regs for the area your looking to hunt but all the area outside the zoned areas is considered "no quota" meaning you can purchase a license over the counter with out entering the lottery, but you can only hunt in the no quota zone.

Bear hunting is a blast. I'm looking forward to getting back into it, but I've got one to many irons in the fire as it is.

Good luck and do a search for bear hunting/baiting on this forum there has been a number of good topics in the past.

Take a look at the zone map...the closest place to hunt in no-quota from Bemidji is off the southwestern border of the Red Lake Res. Look around for what ag land may offer for food sources and if you can get permission I'd set-up as close to the Reservation boundry as possible,(within a mile or two). When natural food supplies get low the huge black bear population inside the reservation boundries will be roaming and looking for sunflowers, corn, beans or a big pile of jelly rolls!! Good luck!
