color blind/ unable to identify species

Recommended Posts

I ran into a personal problem i should say im color blind not totally i can see most of the colors except when mixed together. Is there any way to identify ducks besides color?

I am going dove hunting and will get my early geese license in case some of them Canadians (geese) fly bye I think i can identify those but if i cant i just wont shoot.

i have the exact same thing going, i see colors fine but a few colors really throw me, purple and pink for example. i bought a black truck one time a few weeks later when i got the title card i found out it was purple lol. anyway usually early on in the season the birds are pretty dirty and don't have much color to offer, so i would pay more attention to body size, shapes - tailfeather shapes, and what they look like while in flight.

IDind ducks if tuff when they come whipping through the dekes. (even if you can see colours.) smile.gif Body size and shape help. I also look at the shape of the head, where the wings are, and how they beat there wings. It's a lot to think about when they are coming at you at a 1000 miles per hour. grin.gif But like you said if I can't get a positive ID I don't shoot. Good luck.

If you want to hunt geese while you are dove hunting, you will need to get some nontoxic shot for the dove loads. It is illegal to have any shot other than nontoxic with you while you are hunting waterfowl. The 7 or 8 sized lead shot for dove would make you illegal if you got checked by the man.

oh so i cant have both loads on me? i wonder if i have to different shotguns with different loads hmm. good point. I thought if i would see geese i would unload and load non toxic Geese loads and shoot but i guess i have to either pick one or the other huh...im going to write the dnr and see what they say

They will say the same thing as mpester said. No you can not do it. You can not possess toxic shot while hunting waterfowl period. You can get expert #7 steel shot pretty cheap. I used to pheasant hunt with steel shot and carry goose loads with me. Worked out great.
