Guide ons

cartfan

Question

I have been thinking about putting guide ons on my trailer and was beginning to wonder if they do any good. Do they actually help center the boat on the trailer? I always considered getting the bunk style that attach to the rear of the trailer and are about 18 inches long. But then I noticed the longer ones that go from the back of the trailer to infront of the wheel well. Does one style work better than the other?

Last year I installed the longer bunk style guides. I can the load the boat by myself the 1st time. Now when I load the boat I clip on the rope and start cranking, the only thing I have to do is keep the boat centered on the keel roller. No more tying up the ramp trying to get the boat centered on the trailer

Catfan: I wouldn't be without them. I have a 18' Lund and have the type that attached to rear of my trailer and can't remember the last time I had to get somebody to help me load my boat. I mostly load at a ramp that can have crazy current (Red River) and if U get an opposite wind it is crazy. I picked mine up from Cabelas and love them. I simply back the trailer up and drive the boat on now. I have spent many a time watching guys fighting with the current when if they would have spent alittle coin the frustration would be gone and the ramp available for others.

A style that's been very popular with our customers when paint damage is a concern, is the rubber roller style. These mount vertically up from the back of your trailer and any time there's contact with the hull of the boat they just rotate. This way there's no dragging or abrasion on the paint of the boat. We have sold alot of these to our customers who just got their boats re-painted.

I added guide ons last year to a new trailer and I love them. They are the bunk style and I haven't noticed any wear. Most of the time it's just a quick bump to the center.

Fisher Ed, I had the same problem with my 1850 Sportfish. Besides loading very badly, I burned two axles. Checked around and was told the trailer they sold in the package was too small for the boat. Unbelievable to spend $18000 and get an inferior trailer. Purchased correct size and have no problems now. Crazy to have to spend that kind of money! But I was very lucky to have not lost a whole tire with one of the axels burning.
