Thoughts on Johnson (Suzuki) 90hp fourstroke

I'm wondering if I can get people's thoughts on the Johnson (Suzuki) 90hp 4stroke motor. If I happen to buy a boat this fall it will most likely have this engine on it.

It's my understanding that the 115 is the same as the 90, just tweaked a bit for a few more mph top end.

Also, can anyone tell me what their top end is with this motor with a 17' aluminum? RPM? Troll down speed? Thanks very much.

We have this exact motor on our 18' Ranger tiller that we bought new last year and we have zero complaints about the motor. That thing should really haul @ss on a 17 ft alum...

I have the 115 on a 17' Smokercraft, 44 mph top end with just me in the boat. 3 mph on calm water and 1.7-2.2 mph back trolling. I have a 14x 21 prop. The 90 hp rpm top out at 5 grand and the 115 hits 6000 top rmps, that makes them different. Great motor. What kind of boat you looking at?

In general terms, about $15,800 to $17,300 but the equipment levels vary too - some have packages, some don't and some are pretty bare and you just add whatever you want. Hope this helps.

What's the difference in price between a 90 horse Johnson and a 90 horse Merc?

I have a 2005 1750 FH with Johnson 90 on it. Top end of 38MPH at 5600RPM with 21 pitch aluminum prop. Trolling speed of 2.2 at idle. I have my boat loaded down pretty good with gear and 2 trolling motor batties. Also added the second console for fishing partner. Any questions on the boat let me know. kjgmh at hotmail

What is this about Johnson(Suzuki)? I do not believe that they are from the same company. I think that some parts of the Johnson outboard motor come from Suzuki but a Suzuki is still a Suzuki and a Johnson is still a Johnson. I know cos Johnson dealers will tell you that buying a Johnson is like getting a Suzuki at bargain price due to trade or import differences. However, when I speak to non Johnson dealers, they tell me that only parts of the outboard are made by Suzuki. Am I right or wrong?

Juan - I don't think there was a price difference between the Johnny and the Merc - mostly it depends on the dealer and what they are putting on the boat, seemed like most sold one or the other, but couldn't offer you a choice.

kjgmh - Thanks for the info. Is the 21 prop you have the standard one they gave you?

TSCTSC - My understanding is that Suzuki builds the powerheads in Japan and then sends to Johnson for final assembly in Canada. This may be for just the larger fourstroke engines. I'd be interested to hear if anyone can add to this....

I believe that Suzuki provides Johnson with the power head and lower unit...

I visited with a Suzuki dealer a couple weeks ago. I have a Johnson 140, he said the only difference is the paint from top to bottom.

I have a 1750 Fishhawk with a 115 Johnson 2 stroke (2001) and it has plenty of snort. It goes like a demon out of the hole and it tops out between 45-46 mph on a calm day with two people and gear. This is with the factory aluminum prop. It doesn't troll worth a darn but in my opinion a 115 hp motor isn't the best for trolling anyway, even if it is a 4-stroke. I'd go with a 2-stroke 90hp or 115, save some coin and get a Yamaha 8 hp 4-stroke kicker. This is the sweatest little motor I've ever run. Just my two cents; 2-stroke for big motors, 4-stroke for little motors.

I have the 90 Johnson/Suzuki on my Prov 18, excellent motor, will do about 37 mph, it will backtroll just fine if there is some breeze, otherwise you will need a electric motor if this is your style of fishing, slow is all in the eyes of the individual. I have the special dampener for torque control, works fine, nowhere near the mertin system but adequate. Only complaint is there is no stop for the trim n tilt function, and because of the rear livewell, mymotor accidently got tilted up while trailering and the shift handle went right thru the hood!
