Steve Foss
Here's a white-winged dove I shot at my feeder in Ely in May 2004. It appeared on the cover of one of the Minnesota Ornithologists Union publications, and drew a couple dozen birders to try to add it to their life lists. It's a southwestern desert species that is known to roam, and imagine my surprise when I noticed a bright white wing line on a bird I figured out of the corner of my eye was a mourning dove. Shot it and went inside for the Sibley and it fell open on its own to page 255, the page the white-winged is on. Go figure.
