My report as a rookie 1st timer in Algoma is.....AWESOME !!!

We stayed at Captain K Landing (recommend it).

Seas weren't too easy on us, first day wished we had some Dramamine, then got used to, even if we had a 22ft boat.

Fishing time was mainly from 4:00am to 6:00 am and 6.30pm to 8:30pm, with a very narrow timeframe where everything happened, just at sun rise or sun down.

Best spots 65ft to 90ft depth, fishing down from 40ft to 70ft. Front of town and north were preferred.

Caught numerous 13lbs and up, and many 10lbs.

More experienced neigbors getting 19lbs and up, a 25lbs was record for weekend tournament, and rumors of a 28lbs and up.

Best combination was HotSpot chartruse flasher with glow and 20"leader with aqua/glow fly, leave it 30ft back from ball. Other people used a "Refrigerator" or "Magnum" spoon which is a green/black + glow local made, but it was sold out (I saw a guy paying for 22 of them...)

My and my wife had a blast, never had so much fun. We spent most of the day in water even if wasn't productive.

If somebody talks about "Muskie Fever"...try "Salmon Fever" it's more addicting.

Algoma, you have to add 2 more people to your "regulars" list.

Glad you had a great time Valv, we used to stay at Kaptain K's but just can't clear the bridge to get up there anymore. Roger is a great guy and actually from the Duluth area he and 2 others bought out the marina last year to save it from being developed into condo's, very helpful with information on what to use and where to go.

That's exactly what he did. He told us his story, and showed us his boat and what to do, He is a great guy.

I can guarantee, yesterday leaving was the hardest I ever been.

What boat do you have ? I am seriously thinking buying a 32ft and up to fix up and leave in Algoma as a "floating house", trip will be faster with a vehicle only ( we had my truck with a 5th wheel and a Jeep with a Lund 22ft SportCabin, see avatar)

We went out last week in the "One Eye Open" its a 30' Bayliner Cierra that is just a little too tall to get under the bridge. Its my Brothers boat and they made the decision to just leave it out there. There is a campground just south of town where you can leave your boat for a dollar a day. Pretty cheap if you are gonna make it out there a few times. They just went back out on Sunday to spend a few days down there. Lots of boats for sale around that area, would be pretty easy to pick something up to work on. Next ttime you are out walk the marinas I saw at least 3 just walking to the cleaning station.

Ran, go for it, you won't be disappointed, really.

I was fishing for salmon, but first day I did get a nice brown, approx 6lbs. I didn't want it actually, and tried to release it, but it floated for few minutes, and I had to go back and pick it up, hate to do it to a fish, but it would have not made it. Many people around got trouts and cohos, I was listening VHF radio and there's quite a chatter on all channels.

To anybody that wants to try, I would sincerely suggest it, it's a great experience, and I think I will check campground out of town if I get a large boat (which I plan to do it soon, I have my eyes on a couple already).

Actually cost of trip was mostly fuel, pulling a boat and a 5th wheel cost me about $ 350.00, while camping and dock $ 160.00, if I have a boat there to live in I will just need a small car (but with a huge trunk, we came back with almost 80lbs of salmon.....)

Everybody told me lake is not rought as it was all the times, some days you can go out on a canoe for miles.

I don't have a name for my boat yet, but my wife's suggested "Reel Cranky", due to my "nice disposition" sometimes.... grin.gif

I didn't know Rogert stopped development, and I am really happy, one very nice appeal of Algoma is the small town look, I wouldn't NOT agree with large condos and development, I saw Sturgeon Bay and don't like it....too much city like.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
