Trailer Wiring?

hoggs222

Question

Here's the deal. When hooking up my boat to the standard 4 way flat connector, lights, blinkers work. When using the 4 Way Round Trailer Connector nothing works. This is happening on 3 different vehicles, so I know it just isn't my truck. Has anybody else had this happen?

Nope, never had that happen, but to me it sounds like a ground issue. Does the trailer have a ground running through the hitch or direct? Wiring is pretty easy really. If you have everything hooked up correctly, it will work! If not, you'll have some problems. Look for loose wires, bad connections, melted wires, Fuses, check bulbs, etc. Once you go over everything, you'll find the problem.

I know this was a "dumb Reply", but it is the only way I know to find the problem for sure.

Hope this helps a little. The 4-flat to a 4-round should not make a difference, unless the wiring is different from one plug to another, look at what wires plug into wich outlet and you'll see if thats it or not. If the colors match, it's O.K., if not thats your problem.

Good luck.

I don't think it's the round adaptor. I've tried 3 different one's on 3 different trucks. Plus, I just bought my round adaptor & it didn't work right out of the packaging. I'll try checking out the ground & what-not.

It your bulbs work with the flat connector, then it shouldn't be a bulb. My guess is it's a grounding issue on your trailer. Otherwise, just make sure your wiring colors match up.

It looks to be time to brake out the ohm meter and make sure the flat to round converter has continuity throught it on each wire. Then use the volt meter to make sure there is signal (electricity) on the round socket contacts on your vehicle, and that each signal is going to the right wire on the trailer. Somewhere in this process you'll find an open wire or that there is a miss wire somewhere.
