Equipment for after-school ice fishing club...

I've been enjoying the fishing during this tropical heat wave yet look forward to winter since I seem to be a much better fisherman then. With that said, I have big plans for the rapidly approaching season.

I'm a junior high teacher and hope to initiate an after school ice fishing club for the kids this winter. I was wondering whether any of you knew where I could get a bunch of used gear. If you are upgrading and would like to get rid of some of your old stuff, I would be happy to take it off of your hands for you.

At this point, the focus of the club will be the basics of ice fishing coupled with environmental stewardship. I welcome any suggestions that you may have.

What a great idea.

Sorry, can't help you out with spare gear but I would be more than willing to come lend a hand, demonstrate, auger holes, or whatever.

There might be a few others here also that would jump at the chance to help out.

Any lakes or lake in particular that you are thinking about? Minneapolis city lakes (Harriet, Calhoun, Nokomis) or are you thinking more suburban (Medicine, Tonka, WBL, Prior)?

Thanks Chris,

I still have to hammer out most of the details this summer, but I teach in Chanhassen. It would be pretty convenient to get out on Lotus, Susan, or some other little lakes first and then graduate up to Tonka or Waconia if parents warm up to it.

It would be great to have you out, so I'll send more info as it develops.

I have a few rods, no reels and a couple of hand augers, dippers. If I look I might fine more if that helps. I be willing to help cutting holes and give a hand if you would like. cool.gif

I put on an Ice Fishing Extravaganza for my students at Red Lake Elementary every winter, and all I do is contact the local stores and have never been turned down in the last two years. Northland Fishing Tackle, Gander, L&M Fleet, Walmart, Kmart, Pamida, etc. have all donated fishing gear each year.

It never hurts to ask. I make out a flyer for the businesses and explain to them what I am doing and it is amazing what will come your way! grin.gif

Good luck and you will never regret it. It is awsome seeing kids catch their first fish. I have kids every winter at school that come into my classroom and ask when they will be going ice fishing?

How many rods are you looking for. I am a custom rod builder and can supply you with some rods for your club.

I have some reels left over from my days of doing sports shows too.

let me know what you are looking for I think I can help.

I am in the Rochester aera but can work with you on shipping if need be.

i think an on ice seminar would be awesome-I've been fishing too much to work on it yet, but as soon as I start seeing those back to school ads I'll start pulling everything together.

Rod-man, hawkeye43 and crappiebait-Thanks so much for your gear offers. I'll definitely get back to you when I have a better idea of numbers.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
