Impeller-Motor Pee Question

Rost

Question

My 1997 Mariner 75 hp 2 stk acts strange. When I start it and at higher rpms the motor pees strong, but when i slow down to troll, after about 5 mins the pee stream becomes more of a dribble. If I shut the motor down, then start back up again I get a strong stream again.

The overheat buzzer has never gone off and I just replaced the impeller 1.5 years ago. It has acted this way since the day I bought it 3 years ago.

Any ideas?

I recently had an issue with my tell-tale hole. Unlike yours, mine wasn't [PoorWordUsage]ing at all. I just took an air compressor and shot air through the system and she started working like new. Not sure if that will help your problem but its worth a try. It could also have something to do with your thermostat or poppit valve. I think the thermostat only opens up when the motor is running slow or at idle. I would take off the thermostat housing and make sure there is no dirt or junk in there. I have a 90hp merc and it was really simple.

Yikes, I get nervous wrenching on my outboard. It seems like things are so touchy with them. Can you explain where the thermostat housing is and just how to check it?

I too had the problem of mine not peeing. I took a air compressor to the hose and blew it out. Also I took the thermostat removed it and then put it back in. It worked just fine. Your thermostat houseing should be on the left side of the block if your facing your motor from behind your boat. Near the top.

I was a little nervous about doing it myself at first to so I went and bought a Mercury maintenance manual for my motor. Bassman is right, mine was on the upper left hand side if you are facing it from the back of the boat. It was pretty simple, like 4-6 bolts and the cover comes off. The only problem you might have is if when you take the cover off the gasket rips apart. The gaskets are only a buck or two so it might be a good idea just to go buy one. After I took the cover off, I removed the thermostat which just poppped out and then sprayed the inside with the air hose. If its dirty you will see the sand or dirt in there. While you are at it you may as well replace the thermostat also. I think that was only like 5 bucks. Hope that helps.
