Texas Style Rigging: Rod/Reel Selection

ZOKU

Recommended Posts

I currently just have a 5' 2" UL and 6' 0" M power rod in my arsenal. I haven't quite expanded yet... but I intend to.

I'm just wondering what kinda equipment you guys are using for Texas Rigging or Wacky Style rigging. I've had good success this year with Texas Style rigging without a weight... but I'm concerned I'm not always gving the best presentation possible.

Do I ultimately need a MH? Also, what about reels or is that just a matter of personal preference? I'm partial to spinning reels but am wondering if I need to start broadening my horizons and begin using a nice baitcaster?

Thanks in advance for the replies! cool.gif

My personal favorite for a un-weighted T-Rig is a 7' MH spinning rod 20 size reel spooled with a super braid for more strength out of the slop. My favorite specific combo is my St Croix SCV 7' MH rod with a Quantum Energy PTi20 reel. I have it spooled with PowerPro 30lb.

For Senkos wacky rigged I like to go with a 7' MH casting rod with a baitcaster. My favorite combo is my 7' MH St. Croix SCV casting rod with a Pflueger President baitcaster spooled with 50lb PowerPro.

I like to fish bass with baitcasters as much as I can and I will usually just tie an un-weighter T-Rig worm on one, but it is a little easier for me on a spinning set-up. It is tough to cast a 1/16oz. worm into the wind without getting a "professional over-run" every couple of casts. wink.gif

*drool*

I *love* the Quantum Energy PTi reels... absolutely phenomenal. And they look so dam cool, too! smirk.gif

I'm gonna hafta save my pennies and start looking for a MH rod. I'm definitely buyin' one with a lifetime warranty.

Hmm... so... MH rod, Quantum Energy PTi reel, and some braided line. Got it.

Now who wants to start up the donation fund for me? grin.gif

I have the PTi on a custom made St Croix SCV with holographic guides and reel seat. My buddy has to tell me everytime I catch a fish that it is because my combo is so pretty. grin.gif That is what happens though when a custom rod maker puts on fancy guides and then your wife sees it and says, "you need to get that one reel that matches the rod that we saw at the sportsman's show" I said, "for you dear, I will!" wink.gif

The holographic guides are actually supposed to be one of the toughest metals available for guides. This is description from the custom rod maker that I pro-staff for, "HZTC Holographic Guides. Super Hard Titanium™ Nitride Coating Reflects A Rainbow Of Colors. Zirconia Ring Approaches The Hardness And Heat Dissipation Of Silicon Carbide", and like you said they look awesome in the sunlight.

My worm rod is a 7' MH 10-20lb Fenwick. I've got the spinning reel spooled up with 17lb IronSilk. It gives me a big advantage when I need to get them big girls on top of the slop in a hurry, or turn them from wrapping in the wood. I get a kick out of watching my co-worker hook into a decent bass (3lb+) and then that bass just laughs and takes him to town with that 5.5 ft ML rod. grin.gif

My ultralite is a G-Loomis and I definitely want that quality for my next purchase. Would I just purchase the Loomis rod I want... and then take it to a parts deal to secure the upgraded holographic guides?? Just curious becaause it sounds like a route I might wanna go...

If you want a custom rod, go to a custom rod maker right from the start.

Any suggestions on custom rod makers in the Cities I can check out?
