IM IN LOVE WITH THIS SPORT

Went out yesterday muskie fishing on a 10 foot weedline in wahkon bay. it was so windy i had to throw out the anchor to slow down my drift in my little 14 foot boat. well i was drifting perfect along with the weedline. about 15 minutes into the drift i was looking up at another boat and when the blade from my rad dog came out of the water it made a little noise and when i looked down at it there was about a 48-50 inch monester ski making a b-line right for the lure. he smacked it and spit it out before i even had time to process to set the hook. he started to swim off back behind me so i casted a topwater 3 times for him but nothing. i was shaking so bad i thought i wasnt going to be able to reel in anymore. well next cast with my rad dog i lobed it way out with the wind. the oppisite way the monster follow had left the area. well about 3 cranks into my retrieve and WHAM. i set the hook and saw the fish out there. he jumped twice and faught for about 5 minutes. i got him to within about 15 feet from the boat and started thinking about the net (i was alone in my little boat) just then i didnt feel the fish anymore and up came my lure with no fish. i wanted to cry so bad because that would have been my very first muskie ever. but oh well. the thing i cant get over is the monsterous size of the first fish. he was by far the biggest muskie i have EVER seen. the one that i got to hook and fight was about 40-43 inches. not a monster but a nice fish anyways. cant wait till i get out again.

It only gets worse man!!! You'll get obsessed and sick with the musky disease like the rest of us, now you're hooked! Clear some space for more lures and get a big net, some hook cutters , and longnose pliers.

Welcome to a very frustrating but unbelievably fun sport!!Was out on the big pond a few weekends ago and saw a musky that dwarfed the 52 i caught last fall, she was for sure thicker and probably longer by three inches i'm thinking. Swam right up to the boat but She wanted nothing to do with my offering. Shes burned into my mind and i will hunt her the rest of the summer!!

It is a ugly thing this muskie fever. I caught my first one by accident twelve years ago, I still haven't touched my walleye rods since then,I think they still have the same line on them from "93"... Maybe I can trade them for more musky baits...hmmm...more lures...ya. crazy.gif

Quick turn and run as fast as you can, it's still curable, if you haven't caught one yet. The sleepless nights and constant daydreaming will fade, save yourself and your wallet will thank you... Or you can keep pounding the water and enjoying every minute of it, never forgetting about the MONSTER that got away. All the while telling yourself you just know she will bite on the next cast and give you the ride of your life, and the irony of it all is we just take a picture and let her swim away healthy with the sweet smile of "OH YEAH BABY" on your face...

Life is Good... You are doomed... I only hope your significant other understands... (mine doesn't) haha grin.giflaugh.gif

half2 - I understand what you are talking about. I caught my first muskie ever two weeks ago(51 inches!) and now that's all I think about. I even have dreams about muskie fishing. I won't say what I caught her with but the TOP RAIDER is now my favorite lure!

Paul,

We will have to head out some time to one of the muskie lakes around the area. I have caught 50+ muskies and my biggest was short of 44". 51" is enough to make a guy have flashbacks for weeks. Congrats,

Marty

Let's go Marty - I can't get enough of fishing. I'll tell you all about where the muskie was caught - but not here!! We saw others that were big on the same lake.

I've caught about 4 Muskies in my life...one about 3-4 pounds, One hammerhandle, and I caught 2 in one day, while live bait fishing for Northerns, one at 8 and one at 15 lbs.

A couple of years ago, while my two sons and I were fishing Minnetonka for bass, my one son caught an absolute monster of a Muskie on a spinner bait....biggest fish I have ever been around....towed the 3 of us and the 15 foot fiberglass trihull around the bay for a spell, before it wore out.

We were able to land it, get some pics and let it go, but it changed the 3 of us!

Now we are starting to take trips just for Muskies. Our tackle boxes are having to be modified to accomodate bigger plugs and lures, we are moving into territory where we never intentionally ventured before and even without a "Fish On!" it is still fun. Must be the hunt?
