Stainless steel prop

tyler97

Question

I want to switch to a stainless prop for better performance. Question is, do I stay with the same pitch as the aluminum or do I have to go to a different pitch. I have a Lund Nisswa (1984) fiberglass v-hull with a 60 hp evinrude.

Well that depends.

Do you have Tach? If so what kind of RPM's are you getting fully loaded at WOT "wide open throtle" with the prop you have now? Are you happy with your hole shot? Or are you looking for more top end speed?

You could start with the same size or go up in pitch "size" for your desired performance increase. you should be able to Demo some props to get the results your looking for.

No tach. I do like the hole shot with the 17 pitch, but top end could be better. I all ready tried a 19 pitch aluminum, and the hole shot sucked. I did not even notice a top end difference either.

Who lets you demo a prop? Are there any shops that test your r.p.m.s, or do you need to install a tach?

Not sure how it works these days the last time I propped my boat they let me Demo a few props, of course they had my Credit Card and if I damaged a prop I would have had to buy it.

I would try an Evinrude Dealer or prop shop to see what their policy is.

I would definately go through a shop where you can try before you buy. Stainless steel will do wonders over aluminum in the right situations, but that is typically with bigger motors (much, much bigger motors) than 60 hp. I'm not saying you can't find any improvement in performance, I'm just saying that with a 60 hp it is not likely to be much of an improvement and probably not worth the price. Good luck.

I run a 19 pitch stainless on my boat and get 5300 rpm and 36 mph. I put my spare on, a 17 pitch aluminum and get 6000 and 33 mph. The hole shot is a little better with the 17 pitch aluminum but not that much. The biggest performance things between stainless and alum is that alum flexes and losses pitch at high rpm and stainless doesn't.

My self I would stick with the 17 pitch prop especially if the holeshot is good now. You will automatically gain a bit on the top end by not losing pitch at high rpm.
