catching crawlers

I saw a post some time ago about catching crawlers with the use of two electric probes stuck in the ground but I couldn't seem to find it. Can anyone tell me how to make a set of these? I moved to a different house with loads of bait in the back yard and would like to catch some without staying up late. I need lots of beauty rest!

I've heard of doing this also but have thought better of it due to the danger of electrocuting myself. It would be a bummer to end up joining the crawlers, if you know what I mean.

Make yourself 4 rods about 2' long, wrap the black wire from your electrical wire around 3 and the white around 1. Saturate the ground with a garden hose, plug in your rods, and watch for worms. If they only seem to be coming up by the rod with the white wire on it, turn the plug around in the outlet or extension cord. The worms should be coming up around the 3 rods. You could actually make it bigger if you wanted by adding more rods to the black side. Keep the hose handy, you might need to put a little more water down as you are doing this. As long as you do not grab one of the rods while it is plugged in, you won,t get a shock. I've been doing this for 25 years with my grandfather and my father. I have never had a need to buy nightcrawlers as long as there was a lawn near by.

Thanks Big DS. I'll try it this coming week. I've never known anyone who has tried it and didn't want to end up being food for those worms instead. It sounds pretty easy. Hopefully Skunked Once won't be reading about me in the local newspaper. Camping at Mil Lacs over the 4th and want to bring plenty of bait.

Lets say I take 4 night crawlers left over after I'm done fishing. I take and put them in my yard.

How long do they take to multiply so I can start picking them.

Another question. Do nightcrawlers ruin yards?

My yard is a breeding grounds for monster crawlers. In turn the grass go's so fast cause of the aeration the crawlers do I need to mow every other day. I'm not kidding. So having them in your yard is a good thing. But there is a down side to this, when it rains you have to watch were your stepping on the sidewalk cause you'll slip and fall cause of all the crawlers laying on it...

So keep tossing them into your yard and some day you'll have to mow every other day and not have time to fish.

Do you pick up the crawlers while it's still plugged in or do you need to unplug it first? How far apart do you put the rods?

I was bored and did a google search came across this below, anyone ever heard of it, or try it?

Get about a 5 gallon pail of black walnuts (Green ones might work as well) and put them in a 55 gallon drum. Fill the drum with water. Wait about 4-5 days and use the water for watering on your lawn. There is something secreted out of the walnut husks that irritate the crawlers and they will come out of their holes onto the ground surface. Biodegradable and no risk of electrocution.

Always dip the live crawlers for a minute in a bowl of fresh water to take off any residual irritant.

Give it a shot...

Also for you electric guys, dont go barefoot or you will be dancing!
