Got our info back from Colorado this week and we didn't even get drawn for our second choice cow tags let alone the either sex tags we wanted...

Got a question for some of you who've applied there before. Are you supposed to get a preferance point for the second license you didn't get too? We all only accumulated one point even though we didn't get two licenses. I thought we'd get two points for that.

I believe you can only get 1 pp per year. I now have 9 pps.

Hey Dog, can you hunt a different area in CO? There are usually plenty of left over tags which can be purchased over the counter. The CO Game and Fish should have a listing by unit as far as what is left. The other option is to use a guide/outfitter. Good luck!

jlm is right, there are plenty of places out there where you can buy a cow tag over the counter or by phone, the list of leftovers will be out on thier HSOforum at the end of July. I know in our area they don't even give out half of the cow tags on a draw there have been over 200 left after the draw but have been sold out a few weeks before season starts.

I don't know about either sex, they might be available too, a person will have to check the leftovers when it comes out.

I've put in for second choice before as well but have only gotten 1 point, that is all you can get in 1 season.

I agree with the suggestions of looking for areas with leftovers. I've hunted area 34, and they usually have left over tags. Most of the public parts are pretty high, over 10,000 but there are a lot of flatter sections. That area of the west slope has a very high elk population.

Try and find where the outfitters are dropping into the canyons, and sooner of later a herd will get kicked up to the high country.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll have to see what the rest of the group wants to do. We were in a pretty good situation with this area because one guy our group was going with had connections for lodging etc. I don't know what we'll do now, because he applied separate and got drawn but neither of the two groups of guys that was going to go with did (we didn't get drawn and the other group backed out and didn't apply). He's kind of screwed now...and we don't have another place lined up to go.

If you have a 4wd truck and a camper, that should be all you need in area 34. This is mostly White River National Forest land. Chains are a must if you go on the side roads and there is snow or rain.

There are enough roads where you can get a mile or two off the main road, and then hoof it from there.

You can camp along Coffee Pot Road in many spots between Willow Peak and Deep Lake. Broken Rib Spring is not far at all from Willow Peak and Coffepot Campsites, and has excellent drinking water coming out of a pipe in the hillside.

There are numerous elk in this area, but sometimes you have to cover a lot of ground to find them. Lots of aspen, pines, and hilly parks.

Personally, we get off the main road a bit and put up one those 16 x 32 Army tents.

Your options really open up if you consider bowhunting. Plenty of either sex over the counter tags. Elk loin baby!
