Fishing Bettting games - need ideas...

Long Gray Line

Recommended Posts

I need some ideas for betting ideas for the trip to Canada. Does anyone have any betting schemes to use to make the trip even more interesting. Who's got the longest (get your minds out of the gutter) just seems too plain. Is there a fishing version of bingo-bango or skins that you all do?

We don't do anything real exciting but we put $1 a day per species on the biggest fish of each species. For example, the biggest walleye gets $1 from each guy, same for pike, etc.. Then at the end of the week we buy a hat from the lodge we are at and give it to the guy with the biggest fish of the week for the years trophy. We take species into consideration, as a 8lb. walleye would win over a 10lb. northern.

We go buck, buck, buck, first, biggest and most! Then a booby prize for smallest. That's a traveling trophy that has to be displayed all year at the losers house. A stinkin' pink flamingo.

I go with a group of guys to Lake of the Woods every December and collectively it is about the most competitive group of 12-14 guys you will ever meet. We are up there for 5 full days so it goes $10.00 per house per day to the house with the biggest fish. Then each person puts in $5.00 for a pool for the biggest fish of the week. The fun part is that for each "rough" fish you have to toss a dollar into the biggest fish pot. For us it is a walleye and sauger only trip, so pike, perch, pout, ect are all rough fish. If you land one, $1 in. If you have one on and lose it $2 in. That makes it fun because you have a partner over your hole waiting to help you land the walleye of a lifetime and then as soon as a rough fish is spotted you are on your own. The biggest burn last year was a pout with a lamprey attached that got to the top of the hole and flipped off-$4 in the pot for loosing two fish. We put all the "rough" fish back anyway, but it just makes it fun to try to make the guy land it and release it on his own. In a week of fishing the biggest fines for rough fish for one person have been over $40.00 so the pot gets pretty big sometimes, but at $1 or $2 a fish it is cheap fun. My fish house pulled off the only 5 day sweep in history one year and I had the biggest fish of the week. I won enough money for a Vexilar FL18 with a little change to spare!

I go with a group of 10-12 every year and again, we are very competitive. We have put together a point scheme based on the weight of the fish. For example, a 1.5-2# smallie would be 1 point,a 2-2.5# would be two, etc. The point schemes are different for each species we fish, smallies, walleyes and northerns. At the end of the week we total up the points and the top two get the prize. It makes it fun and interesting especially when we get back to the cabin at the end of the day.

First, biggest, most is what we do...you can even divide it out and do all three for each/every species...then you don't get the argument of which is the bigger fish...the 28" northern, or the 27" walleye that weighs more...

We don't do a flamingo prize for smallest, though.

The flamingo has the names and years of every loser that has ever had the unfortunate experience of displaying it.

The ugly thing has to be on display for the whole year. What an eye sore.

We were thinking of doing the same thing for our Fantasy Football Leauge except instead of a pink flamingo, it was a golden toilet bowl seat you had to hang on the wall untill someone else took the thorne as "loser".

But as far as fishing we almost always go $1 for first fish and biggest usually gets drinks bought for them.

We (9 of us) just got back from NW Angle. It was our 5th year of going up there. We each put $10 in the pot for the biggest walleye for the weekend. The winner gets the money and a traveling plaque that gets his name, date and length of fish on it for the year til the next trip.

We also have a 1st & biggest in each boat.
