Lac Seul - Chamberlain Narrows

Recommended Posts

My group of 11 will be up there the last week of June. Last year our group of 4 was up there at the same time and we had a fantastic trip. Has anyone been up there recently and care to give us a report?

We were up for the opener. With the early ice out, the quantity of fish was great but the quality was down. Our biggest walleye was 29 1/4" with many walleyes in the 24"-26" range. We have found with a late ice out, we get quite a few walleyes over 30". Good luck and have fun.

Fish Head: Sounds like we will be there the same time as you. (6/25 - 7/2 for us). Six of us in two gray Alumacrafts. Haven't heard much by way of reports from this season, but when we're fishing on a fish factory like Lac Seul how can it be anything other than fantastic?

Nine days and counting!

Zaraspook- that still sounds like good quality to me!

Lakeside- Welcome to Fishing Minnesota! I see this is your first post. Our group will be there from 6/28 to 7/2. There will be 4 boats in our group. Mine is a new Alumacraft with a 140 Suzuki. Last year there were several posts discussing the fishing before I went up there. This year there hasn’t been any talk.

My 12 year old son and I are going to Rainy Lake tomorrow for 4 days and than Lac Seul a week latter. I can hardly wait!

Ozzie, Fish Head: 7 days and counting for our group. Getting close enough now that we can start to see what the weather pattern is setting up to be. Right now the 10 day forecast looks a lot like summer. Maybe more sun than I'd like for fishing 'eyes, but nice warm days for hunting the big pike. Anything will be better that last year (20 - 27 June) when it was cold, wet and windy for a full week.

Good Luck this weekend if you are tuning up.

Lakeside, we were up the week right after you last year. We had great weather. The people up at Lac Seul Outposts kept thanking us for bringing the weather up with us.

Last year the fishing was great. We had better success south of camp, however I hear most people do better on the north side. This year we will also spend some time on Northerns and Muskys. Last year was all walleye.

Have fun everyone, and don't forget to post how you did when you get back.

Fish Head:

Funny how you get into a pattern and don't change. We always have better fishing north of camp. Could it be that we only fish to the north? Actually not true, we wil hit it pretty hard as far south as Bear Narrows. North, we go almost as far as the water goes.

We tend to fish walleye until we get bored, usually is about lunch time in my boat, and then get out the big sticks. Once you see a 60" class fish next to the boat you'll find it hard to concentrate on 'eyes.

Talked to a fellow who fished Lake St. Joe last week. Crummy weather, but great fishing. Nothing out of the ordinary, which is good news for us, as it means we should see just about what we expect. I can't wait.

Fish Head,

Unfortunately we had to delay our Lac Seul outpost trip a couple weeks. I know we were up there together last year and should have been up this time, but a family situation changed that. Now I have to sit back and read the latest reports for this area. Make sure you hit Merritt Point for those pike and Muskies. Good Luck

Sorry to hear Still. I'll let you know how it goes. Last year was the only time I've been up there and didn't fish any Musky, but I will this year. Is just off Merritt Point a good Musky spot? I heard it was a good walleye spot, but we didn't do as well there as we did in other areas. My biggest fish (27 1/2), came from the north end. Anyone fish Wapesi? I didn't try there last year, but I might give it a shot this year.

Merrit Point is that to the north or south of mahkwa? We thought of hiring a guide one day to take us musky fishing.. I hear they grow them big around there!!!

Fish Head,

The Musky you see above the fish cleaning house came off of merritt. we caught a 40 and 42 inch pike off merritt last year. We tend to use cranks as the drop off is quite quick there. try hitting merritt early morning or later in the evening for the walleyes . this is an excellent spot for large fish. It has been atleast five years since we fished wapesi. I know there are some good spots there, but can't remember much about the area. Did you hit Scaler last year?

Ozzie,

Without a map, I am really bad with directions. I can guide you to merritt from the Lacseul outposts cabins, but that would be it. Over the years we have marked our spots from shore and give them are own names, merritt not being one of them.

Fish Head,

Also throw some plugs around the sunken trees near the single cabin on your way to merritt. This has produced some nice fish in the past. I can't remember what the name is, but you should remember it on your left hand side near the last turn to merritt. Good luck guys

Fish Head,

Scaler is a small lake about 15 minutes from the outpost. You will see this on your map There is a waterfall area located on the far left corner when entering the lake. The water moves pretty quick through there and the walleye/pike fishing is great. Outside of Merritt for size, this would be my second or third choice. I would highly recommend your group makes the trip. The pike are stacked up in this area with the walleyes and debris. You will lose some jigs along with pike feeding on the walleyes.

I know we all have our little spots we like to fish, but in the 30 yrs. our group has been going up these two are good, but popular at times.

Can't believe it is that time of year again for another Lac Sul trip.

One thing about Merritt as you may have found out last year is it can be hit or miss. One of the days your up, I can guarantee it will be on. Now if you only knew what day that was.

Thanks for the good info Still. I'll have to take my boat over to Scaler one day. I know where it is on the map, I just haven't tried it yet. 30 years! Wow, you must know every nook and cranny of the area.

Lakeside: Only 3 days left for you. You must be counting the hours!

Sitting in a looong meeting listening to blah, blah, blah and getting pumped for fishing. 1 day, 19 hours and 41 minutes until wheels roll north.

Talked to a fellow at Joe's yesterday who has a friend comming back from Lac Seul today (house boat out of Hudson). I'll get an update if I can and post tomorrow.

We take a run to Wapesi every year. Have fished a lot of spots with varried success. Just like elsewhere on the lake, there are more likely spots than time to cover them. Guess that why we keep going back.

Isn't the single cabin up from the resort called Tom's Cabin or somthing of that nature? We havent been up there in about 5 years but I would sure love to make that trip again.

Fish Head,

Alot of things have changed in the 30 yrs. For a long time camping was the only way to fish the area, unless you had a houseboat. Then slowly, but surely the cabins started to appear. This made it very convenient for our group given all the items we needed to bring back then. There are alot of little spots we have found over the years within a 20 minute boat ride of the lodge. I guess when you fish the same area for so long, you are bound to stumble over a few. If you guys keep your date for future years I'm sure we will meet and possible fish some of these less famous spots. Good Luck to your group

You are right. The cabin is called Tom's Cabin. We use to stay there when it was owned by Ken & Brenda. Before it was remodeled to the way it is today. It was fun to be out there on your own vs. staying at the main camp. We use to have a nice bonfire every night and tell lies along with a couple of cold Blue's. Now it is owned and run by Andersons.

We just got back this weekend. Had a great trip! Didn't have quite the success as last year, but still a great trip. My 13 year old son caught several large northerns off the dock including a 40".

It was nice to meet you Lakeside. We are still discussing it, but our group might be going up at the same time again next year.

Fish Head,

Did you try Scaler or Merritt? Our group is going up Thursday and am having a hard time concentrating at work. Any good stories you could share with us? I assume Kenny is doing great!

Hi Still,

We had a great trip. I didn't get up to Merritt.

I did go to Scaler Lake. We fished in the mouth of one of the inlets for a while and did so so. We fished on the windy side of one of the islands and killed them.

I didn't get a chance to talk to Kenny much. Have fun and let me know how you did.
