Motor problem...

Last night I got home and I had lube leaking from my lower unit. It was coming out by the prop and by the water-pump intake. This was only the second time I was out this year and I just re-filled the lower unit lube before last weekend. I was wondering if I over-filled it, or if I busted some seals. Any advice on this would be very helpful... I am very depressed right now.

Are sure it is gear case lube? My old Evinrude would drip some oil from there once in a while but it was from the exhaust not the gear case (unburned oil and gas). I chalked it up to old age since it never gave me any trouble. If you check the gear lube now and it is the same color as when you put it in you are probably OK. If it is milky, then you have a leak. Hope this helps………

The stuff that was leaking out was water and lube together.

Looks like a trip to the shop is in order.

I drained the rest of the lower-unit and the lub looked fine. I am not sure what to think. I am going to call some people and get some different opinions. I would love to hear anybody's .02 on this.

It sounds like you may have either blown the seal on your lower unit or may be missing your O-ring

i think your right.......you overfilled it and need a new seal. don't be so bumbed man, at least you caught it now before any real damage was done.

Also something I forgot to add, take off your prop and look there is probably fishing line in there, that will blow out seal's on the lower units every the time

And if you were on vermilion on the opener you should also find a #7 perch rapala!

I still say this was unburned oil leaking out of the exhaust…………..I know you said there was water too but it would not be unusual for water to drip out after the motor was in the water. If there were no signs of water in the lube when you drained it, then just keep an eye on it for now and see how it goes. Unless you are planning a remote trip to somewhere, I would wait and see if it does get water in the lube.

Can you overfill this???? I guess I always filled from the bottom and kept forcing it in until it statred to flow out the top. How could it overfill?

when oil warms up it expands and will be forced out between the seal and the output shaft, when I relube my 75 H.P.I do it the same way you described, but I let about a tablespoon full run back out before I put the plug in the bottom hole, this alows for expansion of the oil.

Huh? I would guess that much comes out on it's own with he time it takes me to get the fitting from the pump out and the screw with the seal back in. But really there should be enough room at the top end. Unless you laid the motor on it's side and filled it past the vent plug I can't imagine you could actually overfill it.

Zap is right. There is room designed-in above the filler hole for expansion.
