kevfish
anyone know of any bait stores that sell creek chubs in southern or central mn?
pikerliker
keyfish I was wondering that myself. Most of the people that I've talked to that use them, catch them. It would be nice if somebody sold them. Especially with my schedule I don't have a lot of spare time to catch creek chubs.~piker
JP Z
S&W bait in Brainerd generally will get them later in the season. May have them now, but I haven't been in there for a while. I'm sure you can ask WalleyeDan.

fish2live
hey, just cause you don't have any time doesn't mean you can't get your own chubs just go to gander, fleet farm, ect. and buy a minnow cage they're round with two holes in the end, they cost about 6.00 a piece. find a creek put it in, tie it off and bait it with chewing gum(never tried the chewing gum but, read it works)put them out a day or so before you will go fishing.i don't know about you but, i have creeks really close to my place. so it only takes about 10 minutes for everything cause i do it on the way to or from work. pikerliker
Thanks fish2live! That might work out for me. I have a creek very close to me that I know has chubs. I'll try the trap out. Thanks again for the advice!~piker

carlcmc
Don't know about chewing gum. but dog food works excellent! Put a handful of dog food in and throw the trap in. Pick good creek locations to! Much better luck when you have seen them darting around.
Ripple
we had some river chubs tied on our dock for one day. Then the perswon that gave then to us after one day took them back! Maybe he will have some more this year for us. If we do we will get ahold of you! Ripple

carlcmc
what do you guys usually use chubs for to catch? eyes?
vern
Creek chubs make excellent flathead cat bait. When you locate chubs in a creek they are usually agressive and easy to catch with a rod & reel. I use an utra-light spinning rod, a small slip bobber & an ice jig (Genz Worm, Fat Boy, Rat Finkee etc.) tipped with a little piece of crawler or Berkley Power Nibble. I live near Minnehaha Creek in Mpls. and I stop by whenever I'm heading out for flatheads. I can fill a bucket in a few minutes when the conditions are right. Not only is the bait free, but it's much hardier & lively than store bought suckers. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure they'd make a great live bait for walleyes or pike. Good luck, Vern
Phred52
Kevfish, I use an old fly rod, with a #12 or 14 hook with a piece of angle worm on it, a split shot and a SMALL icefishing bobber. I sit about 90 yards from the Minnesota River on a creek, along my mother-in-laws driveway and catch 'til I'm tired. GOSH!, I'm gonna miss her! In my traps, I use crackers in a cloth bag or old tropical fishfood. Either has worked quite well in the past. I'd wonder about the dogfood.... Wouldn't you think you'ld catch "dogfish"???
