Mike Walerak
Definatly go with Offshore. The tattle flags are also worth the extra money.mw
Jim Hudson
Personally after running off shore and church tackle planers... I have stuck with the church's walleye board... especially fishing big water with big waves... for my preference, the church's are easier to take off when reeling in a fish, especially alone and you havent set the board to release when a fish hits.... and the moveable weight on the bottom of the board can help alot when your trolling bouncers or when your in big waves... off shore makes a good board, but for my buck I will stick with church tackle... with the church tackle walleye board, you can upgrade to tattle flags and they even make small red lights to attach if you are fishing at night... abens1078
I'm also a Church board fan. 1 clip vs. 2 clip doesn't sound like much but when you face cold, wind and waves it makes life a little easier. Both are great buys but I've used both and I like Church. I'm not a flag guy though, I just don't care for them that much for the extra cost. Good luckJust wait 'til you see a hawg female take your board under......I love it.
outdoor ran
Just curious how you guys like to run your in-line boards? I like to take the back clip off and put a swivel on there. When the walleyes hit them most of the time I can just reel up to the board and have someone take it off while you keep the line tight. When the trout and salmon hit they seem to trip it and the board slides down to a small sinker in front of the bait and stops. You sure do get a fight when that board dives. Last year I was trolling and these guys had thier boards set to release completely from there line. Any way, I almost got run over by their buddys boat which was trolling around and picking up their boards they would drop. Its not good to turn hard and stop with 9 lines out. I guess dropping them on calm places without any other boats around is alright. I really like off shore myself, I haven't tried the church yet. abens1078
The suggestion with the the swivel is exactly why I like the Church boards. The back of the board allows the line to 'pass through.' I think they give you an excellent advantage when conditions allow. I've seldomly, if ever, outfished the person in the boat who was using boards. I'm a firm believer that the more active fish are higher in the water colum and the boards allow you to get closer to those fish without the boat moise causing them to spook. I usually run one plug deep and another in the top 8 FOW depending on conditions and depths I will encounter. Soup bowl type lakes are where I have the most experience with running boards so that's my personal preferrence and where I have the most confidence.LAst fall I was given a set of snap weights and got to try those out on some live bait spinners behind planer boards. That's something I will be experimenting with more this year as well. I prefer crank baits right now because my favorite soup bowl has an abundance of little Walleyes and the lost sensitivity leaves you open to bait stealers.Well after that ramble I should have just said I like to experiment. The future might hold a Mast & Skis set up but we'll see.
Northlander
Randy I run the Offshores and wrap the line on the 1st release. This is a must with superlines. I personally run 10-12 pound Xt. Once you lose a board you learn to wrap or have to go back. I may go to a snap swivel on the back and put a swivel or splitshot about 10-12' back of the bait. I just dont like a board hangin down by my fish.I will be using a trolling mast and single ski,s more this year.
Xplorer
Another vote for the Church boards. I used the offshore for a few years and didnt like double wrapping fireline. The church snapper clip holds braids with no problem (and i use them to run my 1/2 and pound ball rigs too) The church's just seem to run better for me.Has anyone added a homemade flag to the Church? It might make it a little easier to see on choppy days on the pond. I may just take the ones off the offshores and put them on the church's. Gus
would anyone have a link to an article or webpage that would have pictures and descriptions on how to use and set up a planer board? I'm a rookie to this concept and it sounds very interesting. Thanks! [email protected]
