Crazy Idea?

32 degrees

Question

This might sound a bit crazy but bear with me. I am getting a new bow mount and was thinking about rigging the old one(Powerdrive 50lbs. 12V)on the transom. Now, I know I will have to rig a bracket of some sort for the motor but in theory what would be wrong with this set-up? It would be nice to have the foot pedal control which would allow me to navigate from the console. It would probably take some getting used to but would be worth it in the long run. Any ideas to make this as painless as possible? Or is this just a dumb idea smile.gif

Crazy? Maybe, but kind of neat though. The only problems I see is extra cables on the floor and conversion to a transom mount. I'm going through a "less is more" thing with my own boat. I mean, really now.... Do I NEED four motors on a single boat?

Drop me an email... I have a few old transom mounts laying around and may be able to help you with the conversion...

32,

I have seen guys do this!! It works good for backtrolling I guess. I haven't tried it. I don't know about coverting to a transom, but I've seen boats litterally mount the bow mount on the (wide) gunnel with a quick release plate. Plus, that 12V plug is at the rear of the boat, so it would work slick. Might look funny, but guys I have talked to really liked it.

Not crazy at all. The first boat I had was a 17 foot Lund that we bought from Shore Acres Resort on Mille Lacs in 1982. He had the bow mount motor mounted on the SIDE of the boat right next the drivers console. He claimed it was the way they were all doing it back then but I have never seen another boat rigged like that. Only had the boat for a year but from what I remember it did not work very well and it added a lot of weight to that side of the boat.

So its crazy enough to work you say? grin.gif

I was thinking along the lines of what Chuck said. Make a bracket in the splash-well and just hook up the whole works. Is it even possible to modify the base so it connects to the well more like a transom mount would? I'm excited, weekend project! laugh.gif

I have seen bow mounts on the transom of several jon boats.. I dont know if its something I could get used to, but the probability of it working well if mounted on a stable, level surface should be very good. I'm pretty sure the boats I had seen were rigged more for bowfishing than they were for angling... bowfishing I could definitely see the advantage.

I guess the big factor would be having it level in the water.

I thought of doing this at one time with a tiller model bow mount, but I dropped the idea because the motor was going to be in the way when it wasnt in the water(small boat).
