Battery ?

Mueller

Question

I have to buy 2 batteries for my 24v. trolling motor. I could get a good buy on Interstates but hear a lot about Trojans. My preliminary guess is that Trojans are pricier than the Interstates. Are the Trojans worth the money? Are Interstates decent? Any other brands that anyone cares to mention? Looking for Group 31's.

Thanks

Mueller

I'm also in need of 2 new deep cycles this year. From my research so far, I am leaning towards Everstarts from Wal-mart. They have 18 month free replacement warranty. I priced them at $65 for the 31 series. Trojans are $120 at Batteries plus. Interstates are $90 at Cabela's. If I was a tournament fisherman I would go with the Trojans, but for me I think the Everstarts will be just fine.

I run Interstates on my trolling motor and really like them. The guys at Interstate are very helpfull and know their stuff. I also have 2 Exide Nautilas batterys that I got at Bumper to Bumper and for the $ have held up very well. Thats all I had on my last boat and they lasted 4-5 years.

I have also heard good reports on Optima Batterys.

Count my vote for the "Lemon Yellow" Everstart Marine batteries!I think it's the Maxx series,as they are a better quality battery than the standard series.I think the price is $65-70 if i remember correctly.

I burned an interstate up in 1 season a few years back. I probably had a *lemon*, but I wont buy one again. Keep in mind, I usually run the thing dead 4 days a week on the city lakes, so my batteries get heavy use.

The best battery I have had, and still do is a battery I bought at batteries plus about 5 years ago. It lasted me 2 of the harsh city lakes seasons, and all the use I have needed it for in the last 3 years and it still seems as good as day 1. I cant tell you the brand offhand, its sitting in my fish house 150 miles away, but I will when I retrieve it soon. Its the only deep cycle they had rated at 135 amp hours.... this battery also puts all others to shame(that I have used) in battery life on the water. I have trolled cranks for 7 hours strait on one charge.

I have also had decent luck with the everstarts from walmart, I will continue to run them in the future.. Walmart is also very good at not hassling the customer on exchanges, so if the battery kills in 2 years, I know I will walk out with a new one.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
