Sod Farmer
Has anyone had any experience with Amsoil Saber Outboard oil? Amsoil says it is perfectly OK to use this product in my 15 hp Mercury at a 100:1 mixing ratio. My engine is out of warranty, so my only concern is to provide adequate lubrication. 0 sledhead
You should be fine. We ran amsoil 100:1 in our 340 open mod sled, with 118 octane. Had to tear it down and rebuild the motor twice a year just to gain horsepower back, by cleaning excess oil out of the crank case.
0 Sod Farmer
Sledhead -I'm confused by your response. Was your need to "rebuild the motor twice a year" a failing of the oil? Sorry I'm not more knowlegable so that I could understand your answer fully.
0 ChuckN
They say it can be done, but I wouldn't do it. I've ran AMSOIL for years, mainly in oil injected systems. Best to have too much oil than not enough. I have re-build 2 snowmobile engines this season, 1 with AMSOIL and one without (used, bought it recently). You can't believe the difference between the two engines. The amsoil engine is clean, hardly any deposits and the other is black and full of carbon deposits. I use this stuff because it outperforms any other oil I have put to the test. I am just a happy consumer, no relation to the company, FYI.
0 Northlander
I run Amsoil in everything from my lawnmowers to my 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. Currently running it at 100 to 1 in my Nilsmaster and its going great. My Yamaha is of course oil injected and I dont know what ratio it runs at but Im very happy with the performance. Great cold starts and clean.
0 PikeTipper
Northlander,Are you running the same mix (100:1) on most of your other engines (lawn mower, snow blower...) as well with no problems? It would sure be nice to cut down on the number of gas tanks with different mixes laying around. Thanks
0 wastewaterguru
Northlander, You're running a synthetic 2-cycle oil in the crankcase of your 4-stroke Yamaha????? A Yamaha 115 four stroke is NOT oil injected. It has an oil pump and filter. The oil and gasoline remain separate. Please don't confuse people. Thanks. 0 LABS4ME
Piketipper... I now have one mixed can of gas... everything I own that is using mixed gas is being run with Amsoil 100:1 mix. I have yet to encounter a problem. I talked to their rep and a boat mechanic I know who sells it and they both said there will be no worry at 100:1. The properties of the oil are MUCH different than regular oil and it is providing more than enough lubrication. It also has the added benefit of burning MUCH cleaner... ie: less smoke (especially in the fish house). On the bottle it states to mix gas at 50:1 for heavy use equipement. I asked if an ice auger would be considered for 50:1? and the answer was no way. They are talking about things like chain saws being run 10 hours a day, he said everything I own should be 100:1. The other neat part is how long that little bottle of Amsoil lasts.I used it last season in my '98 115hp Johnson. (Make sure you buy the right oil for your application). The motor ran absolutley flawless, smoked less, and I could idle it down without it building up crud on the spark plugs. There were nights of trolling cranks where I would run the boat for 3 hours at low throttle setting and it would hold a speed of 2.3 mph. If I used regular injection oil, I would have to change plugs every couple times out with that amount of trolling, or run it wide open throttle to clean out the cylinders of unused oil every hour or so.This year I bought a boat with an Optimax and anoter friend of mine who is a charter captain on Lake Superior and has twin Opti's has gone to Amsoil... he says his motors are running better and even cleaner than they did the year before. This guy is an auto mechanic for a large dealership, so he knows his stuff and he stands by Amsoil in everything.I'm sold!Good Luck!Ken
0 ccarlson
I ran 100 to 1 Amsoil in my old boat (25 merc) for years and everyone told me I was crazy. When I went to trade they did a leak down test on the cylinders and I told the mechanic what I had been doing. He expected to find the cylinders fried and was surprised to find them within very close tolerances of a brand new motor!ccarlson
0 ccarlson
One note for those reading. Be sure you are using the amsoil designed to be mixed at 100 to 1 (it is clearly marked). The amsoil injector oil is not the same oil as the 100 to 1. Injector oil can be used for mixing gas but only at the ratio needed by the engine. ccarlson
0 Northlander
Im sorry about the confusion. My old Yamaha was oil injected. My 115 yamaha 4 stroke is not. It of course has a seperate resivour for my 4 stroke Amsoil. Im not running 2 stroke oil in my 4 stroke. Yes I run the same 100 to 1 in my mower as I do my Auger. I would make sure to contact Amsoil with questions on your specific mowers, motors etc. They can tell ya exactly what to run and how rich.
0 who are those guy
Has anyone had experience with using amsoil in older outboards? 50's & 60's small outboards?
0 Sod Farmer
Thanks for the info! I will be giving Amsoil a try at 100:1. I had always heard that Amsoil was a good product, but I didn't know anyone who had any actual experience at the 100:1 ratio.
0 eyeshole
Just my 2 cents. I work in a water plant and we use all amsoil products for the simple fact that gearboxes or what have you last 3-5 times longer on amsoil lubricants. I also run 2-stroke ams mixed at 100-1 on my 79 15 horse johnson. No probs yet. I am truly a firm believer in amsoil.
