They are good for shore fishing. It would let you know if you are fishing water deep enough for what you are pursuing.

I have one and I like it. Whether or not it's worth the money is up to you. Like kslipsinker said, it's good for finding depth and suspended objects (fish?) while shore fishing. My best results were when I used it to drift into or over an area I didn't want to spook with the boat. The screen res is really primitive, but it is only 1 1/2" after all.
