You might have to contact St. Croix directly I not sure though. I looked on there web page and they say that they do warrenty and will repair or replace. So I would assume that means you need to send it in. Some rod places like to look at the rod to see how it broke if it was due to a fail materials or if it is from owner mis-use. Not sure how they can tell but they say they can.

You MUST contact St. Croix to have them honor the lifetime warantee. Also, it will be reviewed (often X-rayed) to determine if it imploded (slammed in a car door, stepped on) or exploded (fish-related). If you stepped on it, who knows.....

That's why I always buy House label premium rods (Gander, Galyans, etc). They usually also have lifetime guarantee. I walk in with a broken rod, walk out with a new one.

St. Croix Avids and Legend Elites have a lifetime warrenty and the Preimers have a 2 year warrenty, All must be sent into St. Croix. Most Gander's will exchange your rod as long as it hasn't been through world war 3.

AndyJ Simply not true. Ganders have been clearly instructed not to take back St. Croix rods. They are not compensated for them. You may have run across an untrained employee, but that is the acception, not the rule. And if anyone bought a House label rod from anywhere that is expressed as a "lifetime Guarantee" and they don't take it back, go right to the top (send an E-mail).

I am all too familiar with the lifetime, best in the buisness, warrenty, and the send it in so we can deturmine what "really" happened to your rod that you purchased from us, excuse!

I bought two Gapen Wilderness North Searies rods for the purpose of fishing Alaska for the Red salmon on the Kenia from there salesman at the Walleye Classic.

Long story short, both rods broke within the first hour of useing them and while my wife was useing them. They both broke in the same place! Sent them in so they could look at them through there magic microscope so they could determine what really happened.

What I got back from this company after dozens of non returned phone calls was a return call from Dan Gapen SR. saying that I lied about how they broke! All the while screeming at my wife all of his accusations. This is now pending to go to small claims court. We have allready tryed the BBB and MIke Hatch. MY advice would be to stay away from this Company! I now own $300.00 worth of useless Gapen fishing rods.

I bought the ugly stick from the local hardware store in Soldatna and they worked flawlessly for the remainder of our Alaska trip. Thanks Ugly Stick!

I'm surprised Gander wouldn't take your rod back Chad. I accidentally backed over a Guide Series ice fishing rod with my truck last year. Gander replaced it with a BETTER rod for FREE since they were sold out of the rod I had purchased.

Great info on the St. Croix warrenty.

I broke a St Croix Avid series up in canada last year. I stepped on it and snapped off about 6" off the tip. Sent the rod to St. Croix and received an new one in about 10 days.

The $20.00 is a great deal on a $320.00 Legend rod, but not too good for a $20.00 ice rod. If it is within the first year like the warrenty stipulates, I would really try to get the retailer to ship it in for you at the very least.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
