Trailer Grease

lawman

Question

I have a 2001 Karvan trailer which I like. According to the dealer and the owners manual the bearings never need to be dissambled and packed. The "Sure Lube" system calls for regularly forcing the old grease out by adding new grease via the zerk. Is this too good to be true?

The axle on these trailers have a small drilled hole half way thru the axle on the top side between the seal and the rear bearning, another hole starts in the middle of the axle on the back side and meets the drilled hole that is between the seal and bearing, when you regrease, the grease comes out the hole in back and drops to the ground, doesn;t come out around the seal, pump in grease till it is clear of dirt or grime, good to go. don;t forget to check the bearning before greasing.

I have a karavan trailer also and I have just kept pushing the grease through there also for the last 3 years and my hubs have yet to ever get warm even on a long trip on a hot summer day. I am tempted to change to the liqua lube system but I think I might way a while yet. Hopefully I won't end up on the side of the road somewhere!

Wow, does this bring back bad memories from last summer. I have the same trailer...and I tore the wheels and hubs off once to check the bearings...just to see how they were doing. What a mess. The bearings were just fine..and I am glad to learn how to replace them if that should ever be a problem on the road.

I repack my bearings and put new bearings and races in every three years, and yes I have bearing buddies. Ive never had a problem on the road and dont want to, could wreck a good day of fishing. It isnt that hard to do.
