Line for Ice Rods

danny berg

Question

I have been reading peoples prefrences for fishing line for about 5 years now and have bought a few of the recommended lines, and a few of the cheaper versions. I am now looking for a good 4 to 6 lb ice fishing line that doen't have a memory, I had so many problems with my line tangling this weekend that I now have 4 rods I have to strip and refill the spools, for the second time this year.

Any good suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I have used 3 and 4 lb. Trilene Micro Ice for many years. Never any problems. I also use 4 lb. Fireline Ice on rods that I jig spoons with. Only line I would'nt recommend is Vanish. In the lighter weights it seems to spring off the spool.

Danny Berg- I think you need to look deeper into your problem. I Could be wrong here, but fishing line in and of itself does not twist up on its own. Line itsself doesn not tangle on its own. My guess is something else is causeing the problem.

However, I could be wrong like I said.. I have been using P-Line Floroice for about 4 years now and love it. I use the 2 lb for panfish, and the 6 lb for walleye.

Try some power pro ice line and if your fishing clear water tie a mono leader on the end.Has no memory so you dont get the slinkys and is not a flat line and does not frey like some of the other superlines. Also very sensitive for those light biters.

Hey Danny...

I tend to agree with Deitz. Especially if you use spinning gear. Spinning reels induce line twist by design. And if you rely on your drag and reel against, it even more so.

My suggestion is to go with P-Line Floroice, 2lb for panfish, 6lb for walleye. I've been using it for a couple years now and swear by it. BUT... buy it on the spool not from bulk. When spools are filled from bulk, initially, the line goes on nice and flat. But after a few uses, it get's really twisted just from the action of the reel spinning it back on the spool.

If you'd like to try and remove the twist in existing line, give this a try. When you're on the ice, grab a rod and go for a walk. Let out better than half your line and then, apply some tension and reel it back in. Sort of the same effect as letting your line out behind the boat. I just got done doing that in my backyard with three rigs. My neighbors now think I'm nuts, but I don't have line twist... grin.gif
