Brown trout

I have not brown trout fished through the ice but I will take a stab at it. One thing your experiencing is that rainbow trout bite more readily then brown trout. I will tell you a story that happened to me in the summer on a stream brook trout fishing. I was on a creek that had some shiners in it. They bite more readily then any trout. I was fishing a nice hole and I had to catch 12 shiners first. Then I finally caught 2 brook trout in that hole. Your experiencing rainbow's first before the browns. Since rainbows frequently are suspended in shaller water you are catching those. Maybe try fishing a little deeper for browns? So I am saying, you found the rainbows now you have to find the browns. - northman

I hear that the best time to fish for them is after dark. I've a hard time figuring them out, but I think I've had a few on at night. Hard to tell when you look down your hole and all you see is nothing, but the water is going up and down. I know that's not a crappie or a pike when it's 8 o'clock at night and when the fish is hooked it takes off 50 ft of line.

I would also maybe try downsizing a bit, I have noticed that in certain conditions, browns are not nearly as aggressive as rainbows and brookies. i would also support the idea's of moving a little deeper and also fishing at dusk. I have been fly fishing on lakes that have rainbows and browns and not seen a brown all day until right before the sun is gone, then wham!!! they are flopping all over the place.

good luck

I really don't see why they wouldn't hit anything a brook trout or rainbow would.

Quickstrike is right. Brown are the very shy compared to rainbows and brookies.

Brown trout in lakes is one gray area for me since very few lakes in MN are even stocked with them. The one lake that I think I've had them come in at night, was only stocked with a few dozen brown trout many years ago.

No lake is truely featureless. If it has no flats or points to start at, then look at bottom content. Mucky or rocky bottoms hold bait fish and insects that trout eat.

It may take sum time to find these areas but it can be well worth it.

I chase trout all year round and do guide trips for trout. One thing that has not been brought up is brown trout can handle warmer water than brookies, splake, and bows. Most brown trout will be deep regardless of season. The one exception is the mayfly hatch in July. On lakes I'm talking. Also they are a very smart fish stocked or wild.

They hear noise well, can see very good, your line should be florocarbon its a must. I am lucky to catch a handfull of brown trout in the winter months. In the summer I do well flyfishing from float tubes at night with head lamps.

I use 4 pound P-Line Floroclear Line and small kastmasters with waxies or maggots. I like a small presentation for browns. Small jigs like the Bro Bug and a single waxie also work for me. On thing I have found is browns and splake like drop offs and other structure in lakes.

Basically you just gotta put your time in for browns. I have been chasing trout for a long time and browns in lakes still baffel me.

Good Luck,

Jim

hey protrapper, how are the roads up there? we are heading up to your neck of the woods for some rainbows and splake, can you tell me how the roads up the gunflint are? I have a jeep 4x4 and i was wondering what lakes i'll be able to get to. i know of a few back there a ways that we catch huge fish out of in the summer, but i have a feeling it will be a no-go without a snowmobile this weekend. well maybe i'll see you out somewhere, take it easy.

we made it around ok with the jeeps and a shovel, although it was hard and scary work. we did really well though for splake even though it took us over 3 hours to hike into one of the lakes i wanted to fish. i could not believe the amount of snow up there!

I don't know how the fishing would have been on those lakes but the one that we hiked into gave up 60+ fish in a matter of about 4 and a half hours. The fishing was unbelievable. Thanks again Quickstrike for getting us on them. I doubted you for a while but in the end you made the right decision.

keep fishin'

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
