Oneida Lake

Tough finding fish on the east end. Fished with North Shore this a.m. 3 nice jacks and about 8 of those silver bass. Cut holes from 17' out to 32.5'. Didn't mark very many fish and the ice was in great shape looked to be about 7" to 8" with slush pockets on the edges. Looked for Fishin Phil didn't see him. Pretty beat, lots of good exercise today. Fishing south tomorrow...

You fished the east end of Oneida? I didn't even know the ice was good there. Here is a question for everyone, We catch lots of panfish in the marina's on the east end does anyone ever target the panfish in the winter and if so where is a good place to start?

Tim, fished out in front of Edgewater where I told you. Got there about 8am and fished till 230pm. Fished in 24 ft. of water, got 6 nice jacks to got with the 5 I got the day before. Marked more fish on Sat. than today. By the way, The MARCUM LX3 is the finest fishfinder I have ever used. The zoom is fantastic. Hope there is ice this weekend after the warm up. Maybe we can get together.

Phil I was out by the gaggle of guys lined from east to west in 31' parallel to the north shore you must have been in more. I looked for your green pop - up? I tried the radio but realized my batteries were low. What channel were you guys on? Did you fish with Glen and Dave?

North Shore and I were off McClanathan drive where that small boat launch is. If you saw two fish trap pros working in and out that was us.

Fished out of Edgewater with my TA partner John cut about 6" to 9" of ice between 24' and 26' of water. Quads were running the east end and I saw a snowmobile too. Well marking perch was tough and far between we managed 6 keepers between the two of us and released a few dinks. However the zander bite was very good as we picked up a 21, 17, 16 and 15. I guess that rainbow trout forage minnow is a good walleye spoon too. Add 1/2 doz. silver bass and we had a good day! Not much you can do when your limited to the east end. I could look all the way to Godfrey and not a soul. We didn't get out to the Vienna bar but got within 300 yards or so of it. It's funny the further west we went the ice was thicker?

Shared a 1/2 of Dark Clouds venison salami roll with John and he loved it along with a couple forage minnows that he found on the ice. LOL

He's a big Steeler fan you dontcha know :^)

Tim, I forgot to put up my polar tent up (sorry). I was north of you. Glad to hear there is still good ice. I heard that a seasoned ice fisherman put his machine thru the ice down along the high banks on sunday afternoon. Sylvan Beach rescue and all the others who respond were there. I did see some folks way down the lake , not a good place yet. I just hope the DEC/police don't kick us off because of this. They made the guy get his machine out of the water in one week or he was going to get fined some $ amount for each day after that. Looks like you were OK today. I plan to be out there on sat.

Yeah that guy with the snowmobile was on the news on Monday Channel 10 trying to hook the sled up to yank it out. They were talking to some lady and she was saying that she couldn't understand how it could be a local guy with experience on the lake usually it's some one from out of town. She sounded flabbergasted. LOL

Tim

Thanks for the good time at Oneida. I weighed that 21 incher you got and it was a few ounces shy of 4 lbs. Nice grin.gif

Wish we would have got into the perch more, but like you said we were limited. So, how many of those forage minnows you got left? blush.gifblush.gif You made me a beleiver out of those jigs. We caught pretty much everthing on those--from throw back perch, to keeper perch, to walleyes, and those white bass. Can't ask for anything more than that.

Johnny - let me know how many you want and I'll pick them up for you and deliver em to you on Silver.

Wanted to let you know my schedule for Silver in the final week of January. I will be fishing Silver 22, 24, and 26 thru TA day 30th. Check your schedule for Saturday the 22 nd and let me know. If you can make it on Monday the 24th great but I will be on more of a gill run that day. Gotta have both!

Dark Cloud is sending me a sweet silver lake package that I can't wait to get set-up and practice with. I owe him big time.

CNY Rob's on Oneida today he's gonna let me know how he made out.

Tim,

I am in for the 22nd, also. I am going to be there the 26th thru TA day, too. That Monday I am working. Hopefully with this cold weather coming next weekend will be safe down there.

As far as the jigs go, can you get me 3 each of the 1/8oz and 1/16oz in both the rainbow and super glow chub? Thanks!

Tim,

No I am not loaded, just have an addiction to jigs. LOL. Have you ever thought how much money per pound the fish are that we catch? For all of the stuff that I bought this year alone, I bet the fish that I catch are at least $19.99/lb grin.gifgrin.gif Got to get out more to get the price lower.

I will get you the $ when I see you next if you can get them for me. Thanks!!!

One of my buds actually tried to go through this entire ice season without buying any new stuff, tackle or gadgets. I'll have to send him an email and see how he's making out so far. I'll swing by a couple of stores on my way back from Alfred. Gotta get back in time for the Steelers game.... Have a good weekend partner!

Just talked to CNY Bruce he's out on Edgewater in 24' and picked up a walleye and a nice perch. He got a late start and is marking fish. Visibility is tough with the snow falling he can barely make out the the shoreline.

Perch are biting a bit better deep on Oneida 36' to 38' north east end. Had reports of 15 and 18 keeper perch the last two days. They got some snow there today 6" came down and it's still snowing.

Any updates on Oneida, I plan on fishing out of my camp on Bernhards Bay (Taft Bay) on friday PM, Sat all day and Sunday am. I'm guessing the ice should be OK will likely be a couple hundred yards southeast of willard isle, have a red honda atv, if you see me stop and say hi. I usually have my aqua view going and a depth finder pinging.

Just got a report there were 9 vehicles in Edgewater from North Shore said there is safe ice out to about 18' of water and middle is still open. Be careful out there and check the ice as you go... I'm fishing with my buddy BigJohnnyIce tommorow for a little Christmas Eve gill run... All you guys have a great Christmas...

It was fun eh Greg., and breakfast was fantastic at the Vienna Hotel.. Good SOS!

Like you said the bite was tough today off Edgewater but it was nice going out there and the walking was great and the ice was better than I expected.

Fished Oneida (east end) off Edgewater in 22 - 24' and caught one keeper stein, 16.5". Tyler caught one also but he was only 10" and Shack, North Shore, Mike and Mike caught some small perch, a white bass.

I think if I do that again I would set up a little earlier than we did, we all marked fish right away and by 8 a.m all the big marks were gone and all that was to be had was some small perch and a white bass.

Fishing Monday with Tyler and Tully is sounding good now. Mike Mansfield said Dave has been fishing it right along and caught some nice perch off the tip of the island in 16'.

Also there was a good solid 5-6" of good black ice out on Oneida and some yahoo was out there with a quad. There was some pushed up ice near the shoreline but it was pretty solid when we walked through it this morning

I knew the early bite was going to be good when we pulled in the parking area at 7:15 and it was full. It was wicked to see the line of shanties lined up almost along the same depth from north to south.

The one keeper eye I caught came on a JB Lures Angel Eye Spoon in Pink Glow Pink tipped with spikes. The small perch I caught were on glitter glows. There were a few donations so I had a few fish to clean.

Greg after you left the DPW departed as well and they had 3 eyes all on sink traps one a piece.

Tully Monday?

Fished a marina on the south side of the lake today with Lee, Tyler, and Greg's son Mike. Slow pick today and just not alot of fish marked but good quality sunfish 15 total between 8" and 9.5" and a couple 10.5" crappies. Caught most fish on JB Lures Lil Bugger 3 dot glows tipped with spikes and the crappies came on Glitter Glows T-Boned with a Little Atoms glow plastic... Good ice at least 6" everywhere I drilled. Lee cut a lot of holes so I spent alot of the afternoon hopping around fishing them but marked very few. There fun to catch those sunfish just not alot of em today. The highligt of the day was Lee with a nice 4 3/4 pound largemouth bass that was fun watching him land that. Thanks Lee for having us out appreciate it. How did you like the LX-3?

Tim,

Keep in mind that spot is usually good early and late ice but those fish like it all year because of the deep water that is close. Are you up to a night trip there to see if those crappies come in thick?

Yep I wouldn't mind doing that one bit at all. Those crappies were very thick and stout for 10's. Have you ever tried that area at night before?

BTW I was talking to an old timer that evening that was out towards the mouth of the bay and he was telling me last year they found quite a few perch out there off the end of the bay. I saw exactly where he was fishing for them but he didn't have any luck on them so he finished up around me in 6.5' of water fishing for gills but didn't catch any. He liked my pail though, lol...

Thinking about Canadarago Saturday if the shoreline ice holds up..

Fished the east end this am with son Mike and nephew Jeff.Found the bite very slow with many small eyes caught on tip ups and a few silver bass. The lakeshore rd was lined with vehicles at 0630 and many gone by 1200. Fished everything in the box from 24-28 FOW. The talk on ch 7 was all the same. Short fish and no fish.HMMMMM. Great ice in the North Bay area but one transmission from the center of the lake only measured 3" of ice. But the quads were still out there.Oh well. Always a great time with my son it is. Tim: Ready for a nite bite trip when you are. To the west end or south. Later this week if you can...
