Good solutions for fuel lanterns (mantles break)?

stick

Recommended Posts

I have a coleman dual fuel lantern and like the light and residual heat that it produces. My only issue is that when doing a bunch of across ice travel in my otter, I need to replace the mantles almost each time (or so it seems). I have seen the Brunton Liberty Mantleless Lantern and was wondering if anyone is using a mantleless lantern with any success. I am not too fired up about a big battery and wired lights for the reason of the additional weight.

Any recommendations of special mantles or mantleless lanterns or different ways to transport my existing lantern that'll support the lantern properly?

Stick,

I to have the same problem. It seems to help if i wrap a small towel a round the lantern before i put it in the case so it doesnt rattle around so much.If they do break i use the insta clip mantles for a quick change.Burl.

Last year I bought a small latern for backpacking and icefishing. It screws onto the top of a small butane canister, and it has a very sturdy mantle. If I recall correctly, the mantle is tied on at top and bottom? Anyways, I have had it on several backpacking trips and have used it for ice fishing since last january, and I have yet to replace the original mantle. I have seen a similar version that can be attached to the top of a 1 lb propane cylinder as well. Nice little unit, and it sure puts out some light!

I have the small one that attaches to a 1 lb propane bottle and it is great. The mantle is really tough and you can adjust the glow from being dim to the point that it will almost blind you. Only about 19 bucks on coleman's web site. The mantle doesn't tie on it slides on. It also hangs on a chain and doesn't get the top of your portable more than warm. The globe is probably about the size of a tennis ball.

A few years ago, I picked up a perforated stainless steel globe for my Coleman lantern. It is amazing!!!!! I went three years on the same pair of mantles. I finally replaced them just because I had purchased a half a dozen new ones. I have never seen them in a store since then, and I wouldn't sell mine for any money.

I thought I heard about metal mantles/globes somewhere in the past. I have asked at numerous sporting goods stores, but they look at me like I've got 2 heads. If you ever remember where you got them, put out a post. I'll take a dozen.

Stick-

I was just up at Sportsman warehouse in Coon Rapids last night. They had one screen globe left at $6.99. It was made by Century not coleman, but I have it on my coleman lantern and it fits and works perfect. Good luck.

I made a box out of 3/4 " plywood to hold my lanturn, its just a touch bigger in every dimension. with a flip up door on the top and a latch. I put a heavy spring in the middel of the door so when you close the door it holds the lanturn tight. No cool down or worring about it melting your palstic box. I don't have many mantle break on me and the box tips over all the time. Clip on mantels are no good, your need the tie on ones.

not sure how you transport your lantern but i will say that if you transport it in the upright postition the mantles seem to take the moving around a lot better than if laying down. i, too, built a plywood box for mine. i use it 3-4 times a week in the winter and i replace mantles maybe every 2 years. and thats usually because they start to wear out, not because they break. my lantern rides in the back of my pick-up so it bounces around a little bit but not like it would if it was behind a snowmobile for example. i still think the key is to transport it upright. i've hard friends who put them in their case and then put the case on its side or tilted for various reasons and it seems they are always replacing mantles. i just use the tie on ones.
