Airplane jigs

Lost

Recommended Posts

What kinds of fish would you use these for? How do you use them? Do you put anything on the hooks? What colors would you use for what situations?

I picked up a couple of these but have no clue what to do with them other than tie them to the end of the line. Thanks!

What you fish for with the airplane jig depends on what size you bought. I have used them for lake trout mostly. Used them on Gunflint Lake and managed to catch lakers and walleyes out of the same hole. The jig I used was a little bigger tipped with fat heads and sometimes herring parts. I have used smaller ones for rainbows, crappies, and perch. Use them in the same conditions you would use a Rapala jig or Nils Master or some other type of swimmng jig. They are fun to use.

They work great for Walleye when the fish are a little aggresive.

I usually tip it with a minnow head for scent.

As far as using them, the Rapala ones have great directions on the packaging. Just jig it up and let it settle, basically... I like to snap jig them, personally. A fast rip up about 15-18" or so, then lower the tip. Watch for the bite to happen on the way down.

Thanks for the bit of information! Yeah, the ones I picked up were actually clearance priced at 97 cents each so I couldn't pass them up. They are larger ones.

Would you use them on flats? Near humps? Deep water? Shallow water? Weed edges? Clear areas?

LOST- the biggest advantage to a an airplane jig is it's ability to search out lots of water. With one flick of a wrist, you will have that lure zoom under 10fold compared to just a jig.

The only thing I don't like about the airplane jig is when you are using a vex. and your lure goes outside of the cone angle, you just don't know what's going on down there. BUT my exp. with them has been on deep lakes in search for lake trout.
