My old hand auger used to have small shims underneath the blades to angle the blades correctly. Once, I misplaced the shims and put the sharpened blades on anyway. It cut lousy. Once I replaced the shims, I was back in business. If you lost the shims, they were really nothing more than thin metal. You could cut a couple of 1/4" wide strips it of a beer can and it would probably do the same thing. I think the shims were designed to angle the blade towards the ice meaning a sharper angel, not a flatter angle. I hope that helps!
