.280

Recommended Posts

HC, I've reloaded my own 7mm Rem. Mag. (.284 cal.)with 100 grn hollow points. Because they shoot at around 3600-3700 fps depending on the powder and charge size you select they will leave a mark. They're great for long pokes however! I would think that you should be able to find them for your 280.

Note, I don't think they make them without, but if you go down to 100 grains, make sure you try to find a hollow point. Otherwise, at that speed the bullet will be through the animal before it expands which isn't very lethal.

I've used 140 grn off the shelf ammo for Texas hunts. Not bad on hogs, javelina, etc. but I had a bobcat walk out at 82 yards and let's just say that I wasn't really able to pick which side I wanted to show when I had him mounted. I guess I wouldn't recommend the 130 grn for varmints if you want the pelt to be saleable.

I've killed four with my .280, one with a 150core-lokt and 3 with 140ballistic silvertips. Damage was acceptable. I would think a lighter hollow point would really mess em up, but I haven't tried it. I think the 130 you mentioned would be OK. Let us know. The.280 is overkill for yotes anyway you look at it.
