Yes! Replying to my own query. This is a first tongue.gif. For anyone who cares, I contacted nilsmaster and they told me the hand augers are sold at Outdoor Pro Store under the name Nils Master high velocity hand auger . I'm gonna get me one and I'll report with my impressions in due course.

You are correct...Outdoor Pro Store has them. I've been running the 6 and 8 inch for 4 3-4 years now and they are by far the fastest hand auger. You have to get use to the offset handle where you are using both hands.... let the auger blade do the work...no need to push down. I have beat many powered augers drilling in 12 inches of ice.

So, you guy's both have the 8" hand augers. I was looking at getting the 6" (and probably will since it's a good place to start), but I'm not opposed to the 8" model considering it may be easier than some of the other brands in drilling holes. Taking into consideration that an 8" inch hole is still an 8" hole, your impressions have been favorable then? Also, is it true that you can attach the lower units to the power auger should you purchase one(my future goal)?

Finally...I'm sure the offset handle will take a bit of getting used to, but I figured there must be some good reason for it.

Thanks guys smile.gif.

I just picked up 6" Nils Master hand auger for $70. It was a customer return but it clearly had not even been used. That's about $20 off retail. They had two 8" NilsMasters in there as well for about $80 so if you are in the market you can save a few bucks. probably won't last long though....

I went with the 6" thinking it would be a little easier to cut 6" holes by hand vs the 8" and the 6" will work just fine for gills and slabs and most anything else.

I debated getting the 8" becuase you can use the power head with the same bit/auger as the hand version. Would have been able to just add the power head to the 8" when I had a few more bucks. Oh well, just have to buy both and have a choice...right?

Well you beat me to it smallie. I went down there today, but it was gone frown.gif (I hope there weren't anymore 6" units). I was thinking the same thing regarding being able to use the 8" on the power head, but I decided my primary use for the 6" would be as a hand auger; that's what I need at this moment, so I dropped the $$$$$ for it. Although I don't plan on doing it, I think you can mount the 6" on the power head as well? I'll be testing it Thursday.

Good fishin'

Buzzbunni, exact thought process I had when deciding on the 6" vs 8"...my need was for a hand auger. You can use the 6" on the power head as well if you wanted to. There was only one 6" left. the other two are 8".

Man are they sharp too...I just barely touched the blade with my thumb and was walking around cabelas with blood dribbing down my hand while looking for a kleenex or something.

I won't get a chance to try mine till Sunday. let me know how your's does on Thursday.

Cheers
