Ice conditions

Recommended Posts

Was up that way killin geese this weekend, we set decoys out on a smaller slough, and just walked out on a couple others to check the thickness of ice. The most we found was about two inches on the smaller sloughs. All the bigger bodies were still mostly open except for some of the bays were starting to freeze over. I dont recommend trying to ice fish anything yet, however.

I stopped by Lake Thompson yesterday morning and found 2.5" on Schaffers slough. It won't be long. Thompson had absolutly zero ice (although you might be albe to walk across the ducks that are staging there). Lake Henry was open in the middle. Twin Lakes were open as was Sinai.

Checked a few other perch sloughs and found about the same 2-2.5". It won't be long now! cool.gif

I wish I would have taken the boat along instead of the ice gear. At least then I would have made it out.

I hope to make it on the ice this weekend.

Always take a buddy and take extra precautions on first ice.

Drove by Scott's Slough today and the wind opened the middle up again. With more wind and warmer weather in the forecast, it doesn't look good for Scott's to be fishable this weekend anyway.

Depends on the wind. If you think about it, how many hrs. of the day is it above freezing? And then, how many hrs is it above 36 or 37? With a little wind 40 degrees isn't going to burn up ice. Unless of corse the wind is 25 to 30 and warm. But the sun is so low this time of year that it's heat glances off the ice rather than beat down on it. For the most part, I think we will be ok with the warm temps for the one or two days forcasted.
