It should go into a high idle and fuel should be richened till the engine warms.

I'm not familiar with that engine, does it have a carb, throttle body or injected? A manual would save you a lot of trouble shooting and save you $ on unneeded parts

Had a local mechanic work on it, he said 89 computors were not as high tec as now days and you have to do alot of cross jumping when you hook up to this one?Have had a 84 escort years back that had trouble with moisture and was recomended about a vented distributer cap? Have you heard of anything like this. I know frosty morning seem worst.

Try replacing your idle air control valve.Mine would start up fine run for a little bit then start reving up and down like you were in side stepping on and off the accelerator.

It should be right on top of the motor, a small dome shaped part with a plug in to it.Payed $30 for my last one.

I'll try the control valve it sounds something like my problem because it will idle up and down and some times catch its shelf and keep going or sometimes it just stops like you shut the key off but will start right back up

Benny Feel I'm fairly mechanical inclined but can you discribe the air control valve alittle more detailed. I looked today and theres a plastic domed about 2 inches square with a wire plugged into it and a vaccum hole on the bottom, mounted along side the carb on the intake manifold on the drivers side. You wouldn't mean the dome on the top of the carb(throttle body)under the air cleaner which I thought was the fuel pressure control. Priced the idle air control valve at bumper to bumper this morning 82.00 plus tax
