First Time Camp Trip!!!

Recommended Posts

Me and a buddy will be going to or for a camping trip by ourselves this coming month... I have the tent and the groceries and coleman stove/firepit to cook over, plus all of our fishing stuff of course. Is there any little list people could put up for us to bring along, or we may have forgotten. Were on a tight budget being so young so anything cheap would help... Were planing on going up the shore than north. Thanks for any input.

Do a google search for "camping trip list". I just did it and went to several sites with good lists.

Every time I go camping I make a new list. Seems like after while I'd get smart and start saving the ^*((& thing!

BUG SPRAY!! Rainsuits, life jackets, baggies for fish, warm clothes, wind up or battery alarm clock, matches, pillow, sunglasses and sunscreen. I just tried to think of the "hard to remember" stuff. These are things I frequently forget. Have fun!

Backup set of undies and socks in a zip bag.

Bring an onion to draw out the stinger in case you run into hornets. My kid once got 2-3 stings on the bottoms of his feet and the onion saved the trip.

Forgot one thing or maybe two, Bring a larg tarp (i use a 16x24 ) and plenty of rope. Run a line between two trees as high as you can and tee-pee the tarp tying the corners to other trees. Make the high point above the fire pit. That way when it rains, and it always rains when you are camping, you are not stuck in your tent and you are nice and warm and DRY.

Using the onion is an old German home remedy. The onion serves as counter-irritant to the bee sting and apparently also draws out the stinger. You only need a slice or the top or root end so there's plenty of onion left for cooking.

Money for stickers. I reserved a spot at Jay Cooke, and the campground, reservation, and state parks sticker totaled 30.50. Could have gotten a flea bag motel for that one time price.

I fear hatchets (Yes, I know how to use them). One of the most common injuries to campers are axe wounds. You're probably not going to carry in wood, and you cannot drop trees. You can only burn "felled" wood. That said, a folding portable saw can do incredible things! Spend 20 minutes cutting up arm sized branches, and you'll have wood all night.

Plus the weight differential is huge!

Water jug or maybe bottled water from store. If you're cooking and need pots/pans/silverware etc thrift stores are a great place to go. Or garage sales. Wiping a little dish soap on the bottom of pans before cooking with them makes it much easier to get the black stuff off when you clean up. Seems like extra tarps and ziplocks come in handy, and you always end up needing a clothes line too. I got one of those tripods for over the campfire and you can do a bunch of cooking on that. Good luck.

I always take a dozen or so wood matches. Take a candle and burn it for a spell, then dip the matches into the candle wax...this will make them waterproof...one newspaper...deck of cards(notice: it always rains on me when camping).
leave no trace and have fun,
Pete

Camping chairs, assuming you're not hiking in. Nice to have a comfy chair to relax in over a log or the ground, especially after the rain.

If you're not staying at a campground with facilities, you'll want a shovel, and likely TP.

Bring extra spikes for the tent, and if the temps look hot, a tent fan is cheap and really make things cooler.

Bring trashbags. I always have a roll shoved in my tent bag. You'll produce more garbage than expected, and be able to pack out any that you find.

I also always bring 3 lighters and a box of waterproof matches. One lighter on my person, one at the campground, one in the vehicle. The matches are always on my person. Walmart has cheap waterproof matches that work well. I tested them tubing down a river.

Cards are a neccessity... Learn to play a game like two man pitch if you haven't already. Makes the rain a lot more bearable.
